14 leaders of Latvian municipalities appointed in the EU Assembly of Regions
14 local government politicians from Latvia are officially appointed by the Committee of European Regions (CoR) - a political assembly of local and regional authorities OF THE EU. This delegation, which has been proposed by the Government of Latvia and officially approved by the Council of the European Union today, will be active in the committee for the next five years in order to represent the interests of Latvian cities and municipalities in the European Union.
The Latvian delegation - 7 members and 7 substitutes - begin a five-year term of office, forming part of the new CoR Assembly, which will comprise 350 local and regional politicians. Reflecting the geographical and gender balance in Latvia, the members of the committee representing Latvia have been nominated by the Latvian government.
When the new mandate is launched, the Committee will join the regional and local delegations of all EU Member States. THE CoR was established in 1994 after the signing of the Maastricht Treaty and the aim of its creation was to enable European local and regional authorities to express their views in the European Union. Each of the 350 CoR members must be politically elected in their city or region. Local and regional politicians meet up to six times a year in Brussels to discuss political priorities and adopt opinions on EU law.
The Latvian delegation will meet for the first time in Brussels on 11 February, when the new CoR term of office will be held first plenary session, during which all members will also elect the President of the Assembly and his first Vice-President.
