The municipality of Rezekne, in cooperation with SIA “ALAAS”, is working on the establishment of a waste sorting system in the territory of Rezekne District.
In 2015 and 2016, the municipality of Rezekne has created 26 municipal waste collection points (closed-type sorting container paper, plastic and glass) in 24 parishes. The work is continued and eight more waste sorting points are planned to be built in the largest populated areas this year.
Senior Environmental Protection Officer of the municipality of Rezekne Theresia's cross: “The best place for sorting waste is in closed-type container areas, because it is then possible to control the waste in which containers are discarded. If an unsorted waste is thrown into a container in a paper container, all efforts are wasted and the waste is considered unsorted. Waste sorting is a matter of integrity and responsibility for each person.
What is the benefit of sorting municipal waste?

  1. Waste management costs may be reduced by sorting waste as the sorted waste is collected and exported for processing free of charge. So if you want to save money, Scroll the waste!
  2. Sorted waste becomes secondary raw materials. The glass never grows, it can be recycled indefinitely. When disposing of glass into a sorted waste container, it comes into the factory where it is washed, crushed and rendered, resulting in a second life. In the process of recycling plastic and PET waste, shelves, films, window frames, carpets, flower pots, clothing, blankets, bivalve stone and many other things that are useful to us are produced.
  3. We save a place in landfill sites to keep only waste that is really no longer possible to be recycled.
  4. We make nature and the environment more beautiful, without any bottles of polyethylene jammed on the roadside or in bushes.

We think how to motivate parish, those who are more and more active in providing some bonus, such as the organisation of money prizes for environmental activities. '
Executive Director of the municipality of Rezekne Janis Troška calls on all people to be more active in the sorting of waste: “it is not yet clear to people why the waste should be separated. I myself live at the centre of the village, and i may have to ask myself, sometimes, why i must go to a sort of sorting point, which is a little farther away from the house instead of discarding my own waste at the end of the house. If we all went to a sorting point, the usual containers would be much empty, and they could be taken not once a week, but every two weeks, and the invoice would be twice. Unfortunately, the people do not understand it yet, so the educational measures are insufficient. It is possible that the parish does not explain why it is necessary to separate.
I think we need to start with the elders of apartment houses, who must disappoint people from home and tell the financial benefits. It should be clarified that the organic waste should not be used in the container for solid municipal waste. I get out of anger when i see that the container at my house is crowded and it contains black and vegetable residues. They are organic waste that can be composted! '
Ozolaines parish administration manager Edgars Blinov calls on all the people of their parish to be green: “In our parish, at the moment, the sorting of waste is an opportunity in the village of Bexes, a further point at the Points will begin to work in the near future. The waste sorting point operates without time constraints and is equipped with a video surveillance camera. The funeral shall explain, if necessary, how to sort. It is more difficult to control places where it is not possible to impose a video camera or to predict where the waste will be discarded. Citizens know if unauthorized waste is discarded, we will publish this information on both website and social networks. We then offer an opportunity to admit – to remedy the situation, whether to be disgraceful, it works, especially among young people. I personally sort out the waste, i'm bringing my child to do it right. '
Bērzgales civil parish manager Arvds Dunsky says that the polluters do not fight, but they ask, pray and speak: “for about 7 years every spring in our parish, a stock is organised when the large container is in the centre and each can take their waste free of charge. People know about this opportunity. It gives excellent results: the old couches don't get out of the corners, but they're throwing in this container. It does not pay expensive but gives tangible results. To our parish containers, the people of other parish are also carrying their waste. You might be angry with them because it increases the costs of exportation of waste, but it is better for them to drop in a container rather than in the forest, thus polluting the environment.
At the time of talks, you don't need to look at the trash, because the patrons discard everything in turn, even the documents with your own data, the name, the name. We had two cases where we found a document in a stack of rubble, after which we could find the master. In both cases, the waste was removed after our ignition. The sorting of waste should be told to children, as the older generation is difficult to see, even with young people. There is also a good way to inform citizens about the sorting of waste. This information is also located in the parish edition. '
Griškānu parish administration manager Janis Alexanis says that the parish currently operates a waste sorting point in Sprudzeau and will begin work in Janopolis in the near future: “in the meantime, the funeral is watching people sort out, but unfortunately, occasionally, people are dropping waste in the wrong containers. Part of the population has already been active in sorting waste but the work needs to be continued and educational meetings should be organised in parish. It must be certain time that the entire community is informed. The main issue is the question of public education to start thinking“ greener ”and save money.
In Latvia, IT was planned to shift 50% from all waste to waste sorting points by 2020. 70 % waste is recyclable, but the overall trend is that only 10 to 20 % are sorted and recycled. Each resident produces at least 300 kg of waste per year and if 200 of them are recycled, this would be a very important step. '
