By February 26, 2019, students of different age groups and their experts - teachers, parents, friends - are invited to accept a 24-day challenge, forming a team and logging in to the Latvian School Open Data Catonium 2019.
On March 1, on the eve of the International Open Data Day, a creative software development marathon will be launched at the Latvian University of Latvia, while on 29 March - at the end of Latvia's mobile telephone headquarters, the experience of the processing and use of the acquired data will be assessed and valuable prizes are provided.
Open data are known to be freely accessible information that everyone is entitled to use in the development of new software, providing social or economic benefits to the general public. Data-use literacy is a future opportunity to create innovative and profitable products or services. Timely learning of such skills can contribute to the creation of data-based solutions to societal challenges and create new jobs.
The purpose of the school open data hackon is to discover the opportunities for pupils to provide open data. More than 250 national regulatory authorities will be available to participants published in the open data portal. The Latvian Open Technology Association (LATA) data experts will help students identify the most relevant data for the performance of tasks, the world of digital tools will be acquired by young people together with the learning center Datorium.lv and the Learn IT mentors.
“LATS-organised haston schools are a challenge that promotes pupils' creativity in technology. LATA calls not only for knowledge to be used to be able to use the technologies, but also to work actively to be able to create technologies,” emphasizes Chairman of THE LATVIAN Board Janis Treijs.
Will students be able to create an app, a smartphone game, or any other modern technology in a 24-day period? This will be judged by the jury, which will identify 10 teams who will fight for the main prize worth 500 euros. The best team expert - a teacher or parent will win a cash prize worth 250 euros.
The haston will be held in two age groups: students up to class 9 and students from classes 10 to 12. Students of all Latvian general education and vocational educational institutions, as well as participants of interest education groups, are invited to participate. Participation in hailcaon is free of charge, registration available lata.org.lv/skolas2019/.
