Ceremony celebrates the winners of the competition “European Year of the Year”
In Jelgava, on Friday, a festive ceremony celebrates the winners of the competition “European Year of the Year”, both winners in the categories of big cities, small regions and large regions, and in individual nominations, and in particular by summing up the “European Year people” of the municipality and the city.
The city of Jelgava has won the big cities. The municipality has won Rundāle municipality with a population of up to 7000, while Tukums municipality is a winner among the inhabitants with a population of over 7000. Each won local government received a cash prize from the contest supporters “Swedbank”, a statuette and honorary plate from the European Commission in Latvia.
The President of the European Union of Latvia, Andris Jaunsleinis, said at the closing ceremony: “the competition is already taking place for a third year and the aim is to highlight the good that takes place in each local government, as well as it is an opportunity to assess what works are still to be done. The Commission convinced the Commission that there is a continuous development in local governments. I can assure you that our provinces and cities are rich with enthusiastic people who are able to excite others who clearly get the whole Latvian society. '
As well as the winners of the main prize, the winners of individual nominations are carried out in three categories: between the large cities, the municipality with a population of up to 7000 and the municipality with a population of over 7000.
- In the nomination, the municipality of Valmiera City, the municipality of Smiltenes, and the municipality municipality were welcomed by the municipality of Smiltenes. Winners receive a money prize from Taipei mission in Latvia, as well as prizes from the Ministry of Education and Science.
- In the nomination “local government” receives vitamins from “Grindex” and special Welfare from the Ministry of Health. The winners are the City of Jurmala, the municipality of Dagda and New Castle.
- In the nomination “Self-government” was won by Ventspils City Municipality, Tukums municipality and Vilaka municipality – these municipalities received useful office technique from the competition co-operation partner “Lattelecom”, which awarded winners with technological prizes according to local governments - Ventspils City received a multimedia projector and projection screen in a gift, while the Tukums 2 nd primary school projector and Tukums 2 nd secondary school – 2 portable computers, while Viļakas municipality won eight “Canon” printers in the Prize. The prizes were also provided by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development.
- Finally, in the nomination “Municipality for the promotion of EU values and opportunities”, the European Commission's representation in Latvia rewarded the municipality of Jelgava, the municipality of Jelgava and the municipality of Rundāle.
In contrast, in the nomination “self-government for an educated, creative and active citizen” UNESCO, the Latvian Railway and Ministry of Culture provided an appreciation article to the local government of Daugavpils City, while the municipality of Raunas Municipality from THE LAS magazine “window” OF UNESCO and the trade house “Kurdish” received the special prize in the nomination “Self-government for the involvement of the population”.
As a result, 42 European year people from all municipalities who participated in the second round of the competition were summed up at the end of the competition. For a list of honored people and a brief description of their contribution, see HERE.
The “European Year of the Year” competition is organised with the aim of promoting local government support to improve the quality of life of citizens by providing a diverse and high-quality education, recreational and engagement.

The Latvian local government shall organise a competition in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Welfare, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, the representation of the European Commission in Latvia, the European Parliament Information Office in Latvia and the planning regions.
