Launching a fight against environmentally harmful waste - spent batteries

In order to promote the involvement of society in the environmentally harmful waste management system, the “green belt” launches the energy collection competition for “clean Latvia!”. The competition calls for the participation of educational institutions through which students are expected to expand their daily waste sorting culture and the fight against environmentally harmful waste at national level.
According to the chairman of the “green belt” board Janis fox, the energy collection competition for the educational institutions has become an annual tradition, with the help of which “green belt” implements the recovery of environmentally harmful goods. In this school year, the competition brings together children and young people for the twelfth year, helping everyone participate in the development of clean Latvian environment and saving valuable resources. In addition, in the course of the competition, children learn to understand the harmful effects of spent batteries on the environment, to familiarise themselves with the process of recycling batteries and to see how much of these environmentally harmful waste each of us generates every year.
The energy collection competition for “clean Latvia!” is invited to participate in general, vocational and pre-school educational institutions, as well as interest education institutions from all over Latvia. The participants' applications are accepted by 31 December 2017. However, the collection of batteries will take place until 28 February 2018.
“Although the results of the competition will be known only in spring of the following year, all the participants in the competition will receive their prize and gratitude for the work they have invested, both by launching the collection of batteries and by closing the competition,” says J. Fox. As a first step in the fight against environmentally harmful waste and handling responsible batteries and other environmentally harmful goods after their end, we provide ourselves with a cleaner environment, a stronger health and a better future. The transfer of battery recycling significantly reduces potential environmental pollution, regeneration of valuable secondary raw materials, energy saving and natural nature. On the other hand, at the end of the competition, everyone will be invited to attend a special thanks event, spending a day in environmentally friendly and positive mood. "
The spent batteries collected during the “clean Latvia!” competition will be delivered to the recycling facility, melted and processed into new valuable raw materials.
The energy collection competition for “clean Latvia!” is organised for 12 th time. The competition is organised by the “green belt” in collaboration with THE “BAO” and the national education content centre. Last year, with 75 thousand students from 317 educational institutions managed to deliver 34.4 tons of spent batteries for recycling.
