Project on problems caused by invasion species

Green Management

In recent years, new animals, plants, insects and various other animal and plant representatives who have not previously lived in Latvia and who come from other countries, territories appear in our surroundings. Often, they do not harm our surroundings because they are unable to survive and adapt to the weather of Latvia, but more and more of these “foreign” plants and animals, climate change, do not only damage the gardens but also in large agricultural areas. These factors encouraged Daugavpils University to launch a new project “cooperation in the fight against invasive species for sustainable agriculture and the management of natural resources/” TeamWork, which takes place within the framework of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Latvia – Lithuania's cross-border cooperation programme 2007-2013.

THE aim of THE TeamWork project is to provide the necessary amount of information regarding environmental problems caused by infestation, to promote cross-border co-operation of the public, state and local government institutions, as well as scientists with regard to monitoring, monitoring and activities of invasive species, which will be able to prevent their spread to sustainable management of resources in the context of climate change.
Invasive species are those that have become Dominant or aggressive in a foreign (new) habitat and are expelled by local species by transforming natural habitats. Invasive species have a negative impact on regional sustainability and development: biodiversity changes, the value of agricultural and forest land is reduced, rivers are contaminated with biogenic substances, the potential for the spread of human and animal diseases increases.
During the project, a variety of activities, seminars and training in the recognition, detection, monitoring and environmental education of invasive species will take place, during which they will also be given the opportunity to acquire knowledge for farmers and volunteers in these areas.
The site OF THE TeamWork project includes part of the Lielupe (Royal, Cupipe, Stock, Pasvale, Panevey, Radviliazu, Pakroja, Jondalar, Schaux, Dobeles, Jelgava, Bauska, Aizkraukles) and the river basins of Daugava (Zarasu, Ignalina, Award, Ludza, Kraslava, Rezekne, Daugavpils, Preilu, Jçkabpils area) in border areas.
The implementation of the project is 18 months and the planned activities will be implemented by December 2014.
Project promoters are invited to participate in the project and ongoing activities. Keep track of the project progress, progress and expected activities on Daugavpils University website –http://du.lv/lv/projekti/es_programmu_projekti/latlit/teamwork
