BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON EUROPE DAY
On 9 May 1950, when the Iron Curtain had split Europe after the devastating war, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman invited European countries to combine the coal and steel industries in the arms industry. His plan was implemented and made it impossible for a new war between the countries involved. The number of countries jointly monitored over the years and the number of countries involved in the project grew, and the European Union, built on the basis of the Schuman Plan, became a beacon for Latvia as well as returning to Europe. The European Day celebrated on 9 May is a reminder that, only by acting together, European countries can also overcome the greatest difficulties, whether it would be an economic crisis or a pandemic.
