Juris Taukulis risked red-white red flag

On November 18, 1987, a couple of years before Latvia regained independence, the Rēzekne municipality, in the centre of Nagles parish, flung the red-white flag of Latvia. The “Nagles” worker, Juris Taukulis, had taken care of it. The Soviet Union's years of insanity, but the very courageous step in the aftermath of Yuri, paid a number of court and long-time condemnation, but the lawyer himself said that he did not regret and proud that he had been among the first brave men to enter the People's way to the awakening.

“It was a fogue and gloomy Wednesday morning, and the events of that time are remembered by Juris Taukulis.” “The flag was sewed on the night before, because the Latvian flag could not be bought at that time. At first i had thought of putting the flag on a water tower, but it was illuminated, so i decided to put the flag on the phone in the middle of the Nagu reservoir. '

Around nine in the morning, as soon as the mist dispersed, the local population had already noticed the flag. Two black Volga with cheques arrived at once. The centre of the reservoir was hard to access, so the security guards had to sigh a lot until the flag was removed. “The hour decipherated that i was the eu.” They had some idea what to look for. He had already gone to my home, finding and comparing the thread used to sewing the flag, "says the lawyer.

Juri Tower led to an isolator in Rezekne, where he began a countless interrogation and judicial work over a year, from the Rēzekne District Court to the Supreme Court of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Latvia. At first, none of the lawyers wanted to accept the defence of the Jura. To collect money for a lawyer, you have to sell the farmed piglet. The money was not enough, so Jura's mum, with a bicycle, went to a 30-kilometre-remote decree village where the money was borrowed from her sister. “At the end of 1988, when the wake of the awakening was already gone, and felt that i could no longer be convicted, i was punished for the choliganism, and in the early 1990 s, in the time of the free Latvia, i was fully justified.”

Before the trial began, Juris Taukulis returned to work and had a wide range of reactions from the surrounding side. “Others said he had to buy or send to Siberia for such a heresy, while others winked and said i was doing it,” the lawyer said. It must be said that the attitudes of the local population remain unambiguous – others now believe that the work of the Jura has been a houliganism and a superfluous demonstration.

Juris Taukulis says that this patriotic idea was born a year ago when he was studying a high-pressure boiler operator in Riga. “On 18 November 1986, with the courtesy, we wanted a Latvian flag, but there were too many people and all the time on the police, so we couldn't get there.” The year passed, but the idea wasn't thirsty!

Juris Taukulis (pirmajā rindā, pirmais no labās puses) saņemot Latvijas Valsts aizsardzības fonda Lāčplēsis Goda zīmi bronzāOn the heroic performance, Juris Taukulis received the recognition of Nagu civil parish, while this autumn was summed up by the Latvian National Defence Fund “Lāčplēsis” honorary sign in bronze. Upon receipt of the award, Juri Taukuli was also welcomed by Monweed Schwartz, Chairman of the Rēzekne District Council: “during his studies, this event was told to us as a legend from the mouth of the mouth. No one believed that he could do anything. Perhaps it was the maximism of youth, but by the same time this heroic work gave it the light of light and the impetus that such small, courageous works could be approached for a lighter future. Thank you for the courage and dares recorded in history pages. '
