The annual CSDD's new bicycle competitions will be held in Rezekne
In order to improve the knowledge and skills of students in road safety, the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) is organising a competition for new and emerging cyclists “new traffic participants forum – 2017” for the 24 th year. The best will be the European-wide competition, where the champion title won last year will be defended. Rezekne and Viļānu are led by pupils in THE competition organised BY THE CSDD at the 5 th High School of Rezekne at 16 May. 11.00.
The main objective of competitions is to educate young cyclists, thereby promoting safety on shared roads and raising awareness of road traffic regulations. Anyone who has participated and acquired new knowledge and skills can then feel much more confident and safer in today's active traffic flow, both in and outside the city.
Participants in competitions must demonstrate their theoretical knowledge of road traffic regulations and road safety, be able to provide first medical assistance, know the design of a bicycle, and carry out a demonstration of practical driving. Additional tasks may be offered in competitions, with which participants will be presented at the time.
In the first three stages of this year, the competition will take place in four stages:
- first round: total 32 matches will take place in Latvian regions from April 11 to May 26. The schedule of competitions can be found on THE CSDD website www.berniem.csdd.lv;
- Second round: regional semi-final, from 3 May to 29 May. These competitions are qualified by teams who have won the highest rating in the first round competition. The re-participation of a child in the competitions of European new road users is not permissible;
- Third round: Latvian final, which will take place on 1 June. They will participate in teams that have won the highest rating (1 st – 3 rd place) in their region or second round competitions, with two girls and two boys;
- fourth round: participants of the team of the third round of the forum 1 and 2 nd place are candidates for inclusion in the Latvian sample, which will participate in a forum for European new road participants in Albania in September 2017.
It is important to emphasise that Latvia is struggling to defend the champion title, because the Latvian Favorites won the first place in the European competition that last year from 15 September 2016 to 18 September 2016 in the Czech city, Ústí nad Labem.

It is reminded that team participation in competitions should be co-ordinated with a teacher or other adult, and each team is accompanied by one or two adults – teachers or parents.
THE CSDD shall cooperate with the national education content centre in developing the content of the new traffic participants. The competitions are organised and managed BY THE CSDD, they are financed BY OCTA, while Latvia's sample participation in the third round competitions is ensured by the Latvian Automoted Society (LAMB).
