UNESCO will celebrate Latvia's treasure week
This year, THE 25 th anniversary of Latvia's accession to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will be celebrated IN UNESCO's week from 10 to 16 October.
On October 14, 1991, a Latvian flag was introduced at the official national reception ceremony AT UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The accession of Latvia to this organisation was an important step in shaping the image of the country and the entire world affirmed a strong commitment to further work in promoting peace and intercultural dialogue, reducing poverty and promoting sustainable development through education, science, culture and communication and information.
One of UNESCO's activities in Latvia is to highlight values that strengthen citizenship and ownership and find new ways of communicating them to the public. Therefore, THE UNESCO week calls for the celebration of values that combine the people, strengthen ownership, characterise traditions, history, state and society development, and make up the identity of each of them.
The co-operation partners and any lead IN THE UNESCO week are invited to:
- To engage in the promotion of “UNESCO Latvia's treasure celebration”, which aims to search FOR the similarity of 14 Latvian values in UNESCO lists and registers with other identifiable objects, evidence and traditions, including the UNESCO international list.
- Create an individual “heritage cabinet” which is a symbol for each identity and also consists of elements and values based on different cultural heritage.
- Latvian schools and libraries are invited to organize tales and talk evenings with recognizable people who are willing to share their experience of UNESCO's activities in Latvia and the world (stories can also be important events, sites included IN UNESCO lists, Latvia's involvement in addressing global challenges, etc.).
- The memory institutions are specifically invited to refer and send short descriptions regarding the evidence and materials in their collection that might be related to Latvia's accession TO UNESCO or describe what has occurred in Latvia and the world on October 14, 1991.
- Local governments are invited to organise conversation afternoons, discussions or creative working groups with their own government NGOs and local activists on local value (heritage, events, people, traditions), not only within the framework of their own municipality, but also internationally.
THE UNESCO Week has been held annually since 2011. Its objectives are to update the role and contribution of the organisation to society, to highlight values and to promote it on a daily basis, to inform the activities of UNESCO in Latvia and the world, to explain UNESCO's contribution to the development of national issues, as well as to provide information on the progress made. THE UNESCO Week is a platform for cooperation between various institutions and sectors, the exchange of international and national experiences, opinions and ideas, and the implementation of new initiatives, inspired by THE values highlighted BY UNESCO, both nationally and internationally.
Please inform us of their measures at UNESCO week by 4 October of that year, filling in the form of the application and sending it to the programmas@unesco.lv. Additional information and information materials are available on THE UNESCO www.unesco.lv website under UNESCO Week 2016.
