Current information on Covid-19

Information updated 11.10.2021.

From 11 October, an emergency situation in Latvia is coming into force, which aims at stopping the very rapid spread of Covid-19 virus without overloading the health care system and saving as many human lives as possible. The number of covid-19 cases in recent days, the low vaccination coverage, hospital overload and epidemiological expert forecasts make it possible for the government to immediately take a decision on strict security measures throughout the territory of Latvia.

The State Chancellery, in cooperation with sectoral ministries, has set up a summary of the most relevant security measures that will be in place during the emergency. More detailed information on security measures and restrictions is still under investigation by the Cabinet of Ministers order No 720 “On the announcement of emergency situation”, Cabinet Regulation No 662 “Epidemiological security measures for restricting the spread of Covid-19 infection” as well as on the websites of sectoral ministries.

7 MOST FREQUENT MYTHS ON VACCINATION

Myth No. 1: vaccines are experimental as confirmed by the black inverted triangle in the package leaflet

All vaccines used in Latvia against Covid-19 have been tested as strictly and carefully as any other medicine. In order to obtain approval, the medicinal product has complied with all the requirements of the supervising institutions.

The black-and-white triangle only means that these are medicines that are being monitored more closely during the post-marketing period. The purpose of the symbol is to encourage people to actively report adverse reactions, thereby supplementing safety data obtained in studies before registration of medicinal products/vaccines. In addition, the instructions for use of ALL vaccines and other biological medicinal products authorised in Europe after 1 January 2011 and the summary of product characteristics shall contain the following black triangle:

Myth No. 2: vaccines are insecure because they were developed too fast

Researchers have been studying SARS and MERS viruses for over ten years, as well as working on vaccines against these viruses, which is also one of the reasons why vaccines against Covid-19 managed to be developed quickly. In addition, in view of the scale of the pandemic and the damage caused by the restrictions on the spread of the virus to national economies, the development of vaccines combined historically unprecedented scientific, financial and human resources. A massive number of experts and scientists were involved in both the development and evaluation process of vaccines, which carried out a qualitative examination of vaccines according to constant strict registration requirements.

Myth No. 3: vaccines adversely affect reproductive health

Vaccines against Covid-19 do not in any way affect the ability of women or men to create offspring. This is a false statement widely distributed over the Internet.

The main task of the vaccine against Covid-19 is to teach the human immune system to fight the specific peak protein found on the surface of the coronavir. In contrast, another peak protein, also called “synticin-1”, is associated with placenta affixing and development during pregnancy. The misunderstanding occurred when an erroneous article claimed that the vaccine against Covid-19 would cause the female body to fight against this other peak protein and thus affect the successful pregnancy of women. However, these two peak proteins are completely different and are not in any way linked. In addition, for example, 23 women who remained pregnant during the study also participated in Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine studies. Studies on the efficacy and safety of vaccines continue in the pregnant population as there is a growing risk of severe disease progression with Covid-19 during pregnancy. If potential risks to pregnancy were identified, such studies could not occur and vaccines should be contraindicated during pregnancy.

Myth No 4: i don't need a vaccine because my body is healthy and strong

Although severe disease is particularly characteristic of people in high-risk groups: elderly people, people with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases and cancer, it should be noted that people of all age groups get into the hospital for Covid-19.

In addition, the long-term effects of Covid-19 disease have not yet been investigated. The results of existing world studies have shown that approximately 10% of the infected persons have been experiencing symptoms of disease for more than three months: fatigue, headache, shortness of breath, smell of smell or taste, muscle weakness, fever or reduced brain performance. In the most severe cases, even patient re-entry into the hospital with chronic disease exacerbations may be possible.

Myth No 5:  I must not be vaccinated because i have chronic disease

Vaccination is particularly important in people with chronic diseases, as it protects from severe disease with Covid-19 and chronic disease exacerbation caused by the virus. The analysis of covid-19 cases has shown that people with chronic diseases, especially oncological disease, in patients with cardiovascular disease, including hypertonic disease, patients with diabetes, severe respiratory diseases, kidney disease, obesity, and multiple-cause immunodeficiency, have a high or very high risk of severe Covid-19 health problems. In contrast, vaccination against Covid-19 prevents severe and moderate health disorders and deaths caused by Covid-19.

Myth No 6: I must not be vaccinated because i am allergic to pollen, bee trees, foods

Currently, grafting against Covid-19 should not be restricted to people who have had a previous or known severe allergic reaction - anaphylaxis - to any of the ingredients of the vaccines. Such severe allergic reactions occur in very rare cases.

Myth No 7: The vaccine produced by one company is better than another

All vaccines registered in Latvia have a high effect in the prevention of Covid-19 severe disease. None of the vaccines currently approved is considered better or worse. All vaccinated vaccines are equally tested, qualitative, effective and safe. A comparative, large-scale study should be carried out in order to allow full comparison of vaccines. Scientists have started work on this, but a unequivocal result with opinions on which producer's vaccine is more effective is not yet.

In approving the amendments to the Regulations “epidemiological safety measures for restricting the spread of Covid-19 infection”, the government also decided that, with the entry into force of the amendments, the people of Valka and Valga would be allowed to cross the Valka border without restrictions on a daily basis if they did not move outside the administrative territories of Valka and Valga.

from

  • in future, the restrictions on entry by the government will not apply to the citizens and permanent residents of the European Union Member States declared in Valka municipality and valga parish,
  • who cross the land border of the Republic of Latvia with the Republic of Estonia on a daily basis, if they do not move outside the administrative territories of Valka and Valga.

Changes

  • from 1 June
  • The risk of vaccinated or Covid-19-affected people with Covid-19 is low enough to apply exceptions to the general epidemiological order in June with greater vaccination coverage.
  • The Cabinet of Ministers today, on 27 May, supported a number of changes which, inter alia, from 15 June will allow the gathering of vaccinated or Covid-19-infected people in private events up to 20 people. At the same time, the safety measures will be progressively reduced in people who have not been vaccinated in accordance with the above-mentioned and decreasing level of morbidity.
  • What are the changes intended for vaccinated and Covid-19 survivors?

If the service provider has been vaccinated against Covid-19 or has been affected by Covid-19 during the last half-year,

from 1 June

from

  • individually
  • provide all kinds of beauty services, sports equipment rental and photographic services, as well as other economic services in the face of entertainment and well-being. This means that only the service provider and one customer are located in the room (in the case of sports equipment rental, sauna, sauna and photo services, one service provider and one household). In this case, customers should not be vaccinated.

Changes

  • from 1 June
  • social care centres will also be able to receive vaccinated or Covid-19 survivors from one household.
  • From 15 June
  • people
  • who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 or have survived during the last half-year,

a number of households will be allowed to meet up to 20 people. They can be both in and outside the meeting rooms and will not be required to use facial masks and distance.

Similarly

from

  • 15 June
  • people

who have been vaccinated against or affected by Covid-19,

may participate in public events, professional development courses, participate in marriage ceremonies, visit cafes, cinema theatre performances, concerts, clubs and other similar services, not using facial masks and excluding 2 meter distance . To provide such services,

workers who are in contact with visitors must also be vaccinated or survived Covid-19

and controls should be carried out to prevent people who do not meet the requirements.

  • Similarly
  • people who will be
  • vaccinated against or affected by Covid-19
  • from 15 June

it will be possible to visit sports clubs, both by training individually and by attending group activities. Non-vaccinated people or those who have not been infected with Covid-19 during the last half of the year should not be present in the room. At the same time, the government agreed to further improve regulation and to clarify the arrangements for measures with the presence of children..

What exceptions are available from the General epidemiological order now?

Already currently, people who have been vaccinated or survived at Covid-19, at a workplace (up to 20 people), may gather in attempts and training without using facial masks and ignoring the distance. Similarly, the Covid-19 routine screening tests for the performance of job duties do not need to be performed. If there has been contact with Covid-19, domestic quarantine may be avoided (a Covid-19 test should be performed during the week). Self-isolation shall not be observed when returning to Latvia from the European Union or European Economic Area State, or the Swiss Confederation, as well as the United Kingdom.

How will it be possible to verify the fact of vaccination and Covid-19?2 ) From 1 Juneeveryone will have the opportunity to electronically2www.Covid19sertifikats.lv

obtain a digital certificate attesting the fact of vaccination or Covid-19 Information on whether the person has been vaccinated against Covid-19 during the last half of the year has been affected by Covid-19 or has been subjected to Covid-19 testing will be available in digital format at www.Covid19sertifikats.lv

. Consequently, service providers will also be able to easily verify the status of the person using the website

www.Covid19Verify.lv

or a special application with a QR code reader.

From 15 June

the domestic system for the examination of vaccination or Covid-19 lymphocytes will be included in the common European digital green certificate system.

Who will be able to use the changes introduced? The planned changes will apply to vaccinated humans two weeks after completion of the full vaccination course or three weeks after the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine “Vaxzevria” (a second dose of 90 days), as well as people who have suffered Covid-19 during the last half-year. In turn, in order to avoid self-isolation, the person should also receive a second dose of AstraZeneca's vaccine and take two weeks from that time. If a person does not have the opportunity to obtain a certificate electronically, a medical treatment institution or one of the customer service centres of a single state and local government will be issued on request in the form of a paper (

We call on anyone who has not yet done so to apply for his vaccine against Covid-19
