Free milk and fruit - 20% EU pupil

As a result of the new school year, school fruit, vegetables and milk will be resumed IN EU countries 2019-2020. THE objective of THE EU “milk and fruit school” programme is to promote healthy and balanced nutrition among pupils by offering fruit, vegetables and dairy products, as well as implementing educational programmes on agriculture and good nutrition. THE EC informs that more than 20 million children IN THE EU have received free milk, fruit and vegetables in the period 2017-2018, which is 20% of EU children.
A total of €250 million is allocated to THE EC scheme each year. For the years 2019-2020, eur 145 million are allocated for the purchase of fruit and vegetables, and eur 105 million for the purchase of milk and other milk products. While participation in the programme is voluntary, all EU Member States have chosen to participate in it. Countries can also complement EU support with national funds. Member States may decide, in particular, what types of products to receive, as well as to decide on the topics of educational activities. THE EC states that the choice of distributed products should be based on health and environmental considerations, seasonality, accessibility and diversity.
In the year of the school year spent in Latvia, 1311 educational institutions were involved in the support programme, from which 1242 institutions were distributed by fruit and vegetables, while milk – 1152. In these educational establishments, free fruit and vegetables received 253 017 thousand pupils (91% from audiences), while milk – 238 247 thousand students (86%). The funding available for this school year for the supply and distribution of products for educatees is 1.535 mln euro for the supply and distribution of fruit and vegetables and EUR 2.776 million for the supply and distribution of milk.
