The Ministry of Agriculture appreciates the decision of the European Commission (EC) to disburse eur 3.46 million to Latvian farmers who, due to the prolonged floods and the floods caused by them, were unable to enter the winter in autumn 2017, or the sown winter was damaged.
“We appreciate the fact that the European Commission and the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development have heard us and understand the difficult situation in which Latvian farmers have arrived since autumn after the autumn floods. At the same time, i would like to point out that this amount is not close to the losses caused by autumn rain and floods to many Latvian farmers,” says Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs.
In accordance with THE draft EC Regulation, the planned compensation will be received by the agricultural holdings which have not received any compensation for the damage caused by the floods and floods so far and which, as a result of floods, have not been able to land in the autumn a winter area of not less than 30% of the total area of the holding. The draft regulation will be discussed between Member States on the European Commission's cereals committee on 21 December.
Overall, in support of flooding farmers in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Finland, THE EC has estimated €15 million in this proposal. This aid to farmers in the Baltic States and Finland will be paid in accordance with THE EC Treaty until 30 September 2018.
