EC photo competition between winners for the first time in Latvia
It has been revealed that the European Commission (EC) Regional Policy Directorate's photo competition “Europe in my region” between winners, during the first year of competition, has entered Latvia's representative – Ieva Vīksne. In total, the main prizes are received by three national representatives – Latvia, Lithuania and Portugal.
Ieva herself says: “I was encouraged to participate in the competition.” I took it as a challenge - to photograph the projects supported by the Funds, while trying to capture a picture where more than a sign is visible. My picture is on the rail bridge, Rīga – Tukums. Thinking about participation in the competition, i tried to find the most interesting and binding objects for myself. One of them was the train coupons where they could catch and get out. In addition, it is an object that is actively used in a very demonstrable way, unlike, perhaps, buildings. '
In total, more than 1000 photos from across Europe were submitted and evaluated in the competition. In response to the question, if you were surprised that your picture was chosen between such a large number of pictures, Ieva acknowledges: “Yes! The surprise was enormous. I initially noticed that there were a lot of participants from across Europe, but many placed only the image of the mark itself. In contrast, there were works that clearly saw the author's idea and the pictures were very qualitative. It seemed that my work was not bad, but the jury's tastes could never be predicted, so there was no great hope of victory. '
Each winner will receive digital camera equipment for eur 1 000 and travel for two persons to Brussels on 6-9 October 2014, “Open Days”, within the European Week of Regions and cities. The winners will receive prizes during the event and share the story of the photos taken. “I think i'll fully realize what happened in the event.” “It's all a little grey for the time being,” that's Ieva.
The “Europe in my region” photo competition is organised by THE EC Regional Policy Directorate for the third year. The aim of the competition is to raise awareness of projects implemented by the European Union (EU) and the results achieved. Hundreds of thousands of projects have been implemented with EU support in all European regions, as well as examples of well-implemented projects are found throughout Latvia. For participation in the competition, Ieva says: “Surely suggest others participate in the competition!” It is a great experience and mobilizes you for a particular topic - it is a challenge. It was very interesting to see how objects are represented by representatives of different countries - one adds traditional costumes or landscapes, others to the objects themselves. '
