Education

On 2 December 2016, the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPCC) of 55 Latvian schools granted the status of a health-enhancing educational institution. It is also the primary school of Feimaa, which is currently the only representative of the Rēzekne municipality in the national health-enhancing school network.
In 2014, the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPCC) re-launched the health-enhancing school programme. The aim of the National Health Promotional School (NVVST) is to combine schools that see a health-enhancing school environment as one of the objectives of the school, giving them the opportunity to share experience and develop new ideas on health-promotion practices in schools, support the implementation of school health-enhancing activities and, by integrating health-enhancing activities into the day-to-day work and learning process of the school, promote the health of pupils and school workers.
By joining the movement, we can obtain more experience and good practice, consultative support, training in health issues, recent information and materials on healthy lifestyles and health promotion.
83 schools and 4 pre-school educational institutions from across Latvia are currently participating in the network.
NVVST may be involved in any institution of general or vocational education who wishes to implement health promotion measures. In order to participate IN NVVST, the school must work on the fulfilment of the criteria laid down for health-enhancing educational institutions. For example, a health-enhancing school Council should be established, the participation of pupils in education related to physical activity should be encouraged, participation in programmes “school fruit” and “school milk” should be taken into account, a healthy emotional and physical school environment should be ensured, other health-enhancing measures should be organised.
The status of a health-enhancing educational institution is allocated to the school for one school year and achieving all basic criteria.
More information on NVVST is available in THE “Health-enhancing Schools Network” section of THE SPCC website
