The World Natural Fund, in cooperation with the Latvian Rural Advisory and Education Centre, invites farmers to participate actively competition “annual farmer in the Baltic Sea region 2015”to represent Latvia among other Baltic Sea countries and to qualify for a cash prize – eur 10 000.

The Award, established in 2009, is intended to inspire farmers to actively engage in the fight against eutrophication of the Baltic Sea. We call on anyone who is implementing practices in their holding that reduce environmental pollution, fill out the tender form and share their experience, ”says Jānis Rozītis, Director of the World Natural Fund.

Last year, among the nine national finalists, the Latvian farm “Mežacīroļi” was recognised as the best. The principle of multi-disciplinary production selected in the “Forestry” of the vijas and the Jura Truit is the production of milk in the production of wheat, rapeseed, grassland, beans and maize. Through foreign experience, the agricultural company expanded with the energy production stage – biogas, electricity and heat. A greenhouse complex is set up for heat use. Currently, the first wetland – the object of demonstrations in Latvia – is also established on the farm.

“I have previously won individual awards, but this is a special reason for international significance. It inspires and gives even more confidence to what i do," says the solicitor, last year's laureate.

What must be done by applicants?

In order to participate in the competition, applicants must fill in the application form to be downloaded to the World www.pdf.lv Fund website and send it to the World Nature Fund electronically to email info@pdf.lv or by post (postmark: 17 April). Application questionnaires must be submitted by 17 April 2015.

Annual farmer for the competition

The “annual farmer in the Baltic Sea region” is organised for the sixth year. It highlights examples of good and Baltic-friendly farming practices that reduce the eutrophication or growth of the Baltic Sea and provide positive, inspiring and innovative practical examples.

The competition is international and is organised in all coastal states of the Baltic Sea. In the course of the competition, each of the nine countries is nominated by a finalists who receive a title and a cash prize of 1000 euros. The winner of each country shall represent the country at regional level and qualify for a cash prize of eur 10000 and a title “annual farmer in the Baltic Sea region”.

The results of the competition will be announced on the website of the World Nature Fund and the Latvian Centre for Rural Consultation and Education and will be contacted in person by the winners.

The objective of the World Nature Fund is the protection of nature to preserve the diversity of genetic, species and ecosystems, to ensure the non-depletion of renewable natural resources now and in the future, to help reduce pollution and to reduce the waste of natural resources and energy. Anyone can participate in the work of the World Natural Fund, becoming a supporter or volunteer.
