Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Tibor Navrachich said: “It is great to see that young people are using the benefits of this new opportunity to understand European cultures and traditions, understand what Europe's diversity means, and obtain friends who would otherwise have failed to meet. The first“ DiscoverEU ”turn proved that when travelling young people grow up in self-awareness and they learn skills such as taking initiative and speaking in other languages, that is, this initiative helps to become more wisdom.”

The participants will be selected by participating in a quiz with 5 issues (with options) on European culture and diversity, EU initiatives in the field of youth, next elections to the European Parliament and one supplementary in the context of second-round themes.
The selected young people will be able to travel between 15 April and 31 October 2019 (spending 1 to 30 days).
In this context, the Commission specifically calls for young people with special needs or those facing social problems. The Commission will provide information and recommendations as well as cover the costs of special assistance services (e.g. accompanying person or accompanying dog with visual impairments).
The selected young people will be able to travel individually or not more than five people (all 18 years of age). A train ticket is usually awarded to young people. However, in order to ensure access to European regions where there is no railway, operators may use alternative modes of transport, such as bus, ferry or, exceptionally, aeroplanes. This will ensure that young people living in remote areas or islands of THE EU will also be able to participate.
Each EU Member State has a travel ticket quota based on the share of the population of the country concerned in the population of the European Union.
Context
The “discovereu” budget was eur 12 million in 2018 and was launched in June. To date, more than 15 000 young people have been given the opportunity to travel to Europe. The aim of the initiative is to create new opportunities for these young people to know the rich cultural heritage of the continent, to know young people, to learn from other cultures and to understand what it means to be a European.
The member reviews are positive. Many of these were the first time traveling without parents or other adults, leading to the fact that most young people pointed out that they had become more independent. The participants recognise that the DiscoverEU experience has provided a broader understanding of other cultures and the history of Europe. The language skills of the participants have also improved after the trip. Two thirds admitted that without “DiscoverEU”, they would not be able to afford travel tickets.
The European Commission has called for €700 million to be allocated to DiscoverEU.ErasmusSearch for previous links available translationsEN• • •'within the framework of the next EU long-term budget (2021-2027). If the European Parliament and the Council support this proposal, a further 1.5 million eighteen-year-olds will be able to travel in 2021-2027.
