“King of London”, “Lemon Boy”, “ladies' joy” and “Šokoladnoje čudo”, -- they are just a few of the amizantic and great varieties of tomato varieties in the tomato exhibition held by the Latvian Centre for Rural Consultation and Education in Rezekne, which is held in the lobby of the municipality of Rezekne for two days, 21 and 22 August. Everybody can enjoy their eyes and compare the aromatic beauty of different shapes, flavours and colours, both large-scale alkaline and round, oblong and oval, and heart-shaped, bunched, and very small tomatoes. Some of them, as THE “Aurea” and “Dimerosa” offered by THE “Lukstinkēvičs” parish, are even more than the size of the fist, but the yellow tomatoes offered by the farmer's farm “gold mountain” are indeed flashing like real gold. The exhibition has been offered by gardeners from Rēzekne Municipality OF Rēzekne, Ozolmuižas, Griškānu, Sherjan and Maltas parish, as well AS Viļānu to Dekšara parish, to be considered and also purchased from a variety of plants from the nursery “Sakstagals”.
There are also interesting facts about tomatoes in the exhibition, as well as the most delicious recipes for these vegetables. It turns out that tomato cultivation in Latvia had begun only in the 20 th century, but in Europe they were imported by Spanish conquers from Latin America in the 16 th century. In the beginning, tomatoes are mostly yellow, so called gold or solar apples. The tomato can be called a real vitamin bomb, contains 13 vitamins, 17 minerals, contains serotonin, which creates a feeling of happiness, helps to overcome stress, fight oncological diseases.
Tomatoes are the favorite vegetables for the rich family of Leocadia Razgale. His exhibition offers the variety “kavalier”, “Agata nelainko”, “Marmande”, which is a very productive and early variety, the first tomatoes in the greenhouse have appeared around Jāņiem. Leocadia bears foreign hybrids, but the seed is bought by the Kekava municipality in the farm “nelainko”. The tomato cultivation is not only a hobbie, but also a pomace to the family table, because tomatoes are very tasting for everyone, also the youngest, two-and-a-half-year-old. One of the most favorite varieties is “Marmande” and also “Chornij mavr” – very productive cherry tomatoes in dark brown colour, flour and sweet.
The exhibition of tomatoes and plants is only one ingredient in the versatile event “chose the grown”, which was organised by the Rēzekne division of the Centre for Rural Advice and Education in the municipality of Rezekne, in the municipality of Rezekne, in order to encourage residents to use quality local products while supporting their farmers. In these days, everyone had the opportunity to attend educational seminars free of charge, in which the owner of herbs and herbs, the piracy, the owner of the farm “Central Island”, Christine Šišlova shared knowledge of the cultivation of herbs and medicated plants, their valuable properties, as well as the harvesting of plants, drying, preparation of tea mixtures and the use of bombs, while the senior specialist in the horticulture of the Latvian Rural Consultation and Education Centre, Imants Missa, talked about wind protection plantations, the cultivation of pumpkin and other pumpkin and the specificities of the harvested harvest, the cultivation of perennial vegetables (rabarbers, horseradish, asparagus, etc.) and the cultivation of greenery (celery, salad, salad, etc.).
