Latvia's national centenary is approaching. With the funding awarded by the Latvian National Film Centre, a number of art and documentary films are in the category of “Latvian centenary film '” devoted to this important event in the history of Latvian people. The fate has chosen one of the documentary films to be filmed in Rēzen's primary school.
Seven children in seven different places of Latvia begin to go to school and nobody knows what will be next. The film will continue every seven years, every time a new director fixes the lives of these seven children and hence the country's way to the future. The purpose of the “follow-up” of the documentary film is to capture the country's fate through the eyes of children, as well as to observe how the situation in the country constitutes the fate of children. The first film to be produced over two years will mark the starting point, following seven children, the next cycle movies will be taken after seven, fourteen and more. They will identify how children's lives are being interacted with national and public processes and will use a long-term observation method that can capture not only existing but also emerging Latvia.
In spring of the previous year, the film director Ivars Selecka selected children for the new film in various places of Latvia who were still attending the pre-school six-year-old group of children. A girl Anastasia was selected for the prospective film at our school pre-school, conversations and improvised cinema. The film director liked the nature and openness of the child, as well as the place of residence in the countryside and the love of horses and ponies that the little girl cared for everyday. With his parents' permission, Kinocamera's eye was fixed at Anastasia's summer parents' home.
The “follow-up” of the documentary film was visited by our school twice – the operator filmed the girls' first school day on 1 September, her feelings when she started her school, meeting young schoolmates and teachers. For the second time, the cinemas were followed by Anastasia, on the way to school and home in mid-February. The girl, along with the other children, was fixed in school hours, at intervals, at the school event. The operator followed the first-class sport out of the school room when the children went to enjoy winter joys on the snowy Kalniņa behind the school.
Filming will continue at school and out of school in spring and summer. Future documentary director: Ivars Seleckis (cross street, capitalism in the street, new times in the street, woman waiting, Valmiera girls etc.), scenario author: Dace Genovska, operator: Valdis Celmins, sound engineer Anete vanaga, producer: Antra Gaile, studio: Mistrus Media.
