On 6 March, an annual conference of grain and rape growers of the Eastern Latvian region took place in the municipality of Rezekne. Over time, the Graudgrowers Conference has become the largest and most important event for the transfer and exchange of agricultural knowledge in Latgale region.

At the beginning of the conference, the participants were addressed BY Valdis Zujs, owner of THE Pušas parish farm, Valdis Zujs, inviting farmers to oppose planned changes in the less-favoured area map, which foresees that most of the previous third-category land will continue to be second-category land, so that they will be subject to lower aid payments. In order to discuss the changes in the map and to agree on the more advantageous solutions for Latgale farmers, on 6 March, while the Rēzekne Conference was held in Rezekne, the Chairman OF the Rēzekne District Council, Monvīds Švarcs Kraslava, met the Agriculture Minister Duklava. Pušas pagasta zemnieku saimniecības „Izidori” īpašnieks Valdis ZujsAfter meeting M. Mr Schwartz admitted that the new map was already harmonised in the corridors of the European Union, so it is unlikely that it could be changed again: “however, together with the leaders of other municipalities in Latgale, we have agreed with the Ministry of Agriculture that, in the near future, the amounts for the second category of the less-favoured areas could be raised, bringing its current payments into the third category, so that the total amount of aid paid to Latgale farmers will not change significantly.”

As the Graudgrowers Conference continued, each interested party was able to find out the latest information on cereal varieties, plant protection products, fertilizer types and experimental results in the fields of Latgale Agricultural Science Centre IN Viļānu, where 16 arable crops were tested in 2014, a total of 156 varieties. As farmers themselves acknowledged, the conference has been strong and cognitive to know what to sit when we sit and what plant protection products to use to obtain the highest yield.

SIA „Latgales lauksaimniecības zinātnes centrs” vadītāja Veneranda StramkaleThis year the spring was untypical, so it is expected that farmers could start to process the cleaner sooner than other years. According to the conference organizer, Veneranda Stramkale, head of THE SIA “Latgale Agricultural Science Centre”, the large temperature fluctuations that winter has experienced in the summer, the volumes are not in favour. “And yet you can't know how good spring will be.” It has been that, in April, there are suddenly less than 20 degrees of cold, and the winters, though well overwaked, are hungry at the spring bare island, ”says the head of the science centre.

At the conclusion of the conference, Veneranda Stramkale gave the growers a grateful weather and complete vocational training, and invited farmers to mark the next meeting date of 9 July in their calendars, when an annual field day would be held in the experimental fields of the Agricultural Science Centre.
