On 7 June, a discussion on the LIFE programme project “production of second generation biofuels using forestry (agricultural) residues and municipal waste” was held on 7 June.
The project aims to develop and develop existing technologies so that second-generation biofuels can be produced from residues and waste resulting from the activities of various sectors. The value of waste is largely low, or even must be paid for its disposal, so that a new approach to energy production makes it possible to significantly reduce the cost of biofuel. The main challenge of the project is to develop a technology that can produce sufficient cleanliness gas directly from waste. The extraction of clean gas makes it possible to produce not only biofuels but also a number of other valuable by-products.
Edgars Romanovskis, a member of the board of directors of SIA “Latgale vegetable logistics” and the association “Biomass Technology Centre”, stressed that in order to be able to submit the project within a time period, all partners should cooperate jointly and intensively. The participants of the event were also presented with technical and organisational challenges and the discussion sought solutions to overcome them so that the project was successfully implemented. MR Romanovskis invited all the project partners and the participants to perceive this project as an opportunity that would allow Latvia to become one of the leaders in the new alternative fuel sector, which is still at the stage of development. In the future, as the development is based on environmentally friendly farming, it will be an integral part of the economy. The participants of the discussion highly appreciated THE progress made BY MR Romanovska, expressed his support for the project and wished for success in its implementation.
At the end of the event, the participants of the discussion, together with the Agriculture Minister Kasparu Gerhards, visited the Mezvids Agricultural – Technology Park, met with presentations and demonstrations of the future project partners. Projects such as “Renewable energy production with biomass gasification technique” were associated with particular interest; “the principles of efficient operation of the winter greenhouse complex”; “cannabis cluster and biomass pellet production”.
The discussions included REPRESENTATIVES of THE LR Saeima, Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Support Service, Latgale Planning Region, Ludza District, Malnava College, Latvian State Forests, Rēzekne Technology Academy, Riga Technical University, Development Financial Institution “Altum”, renewable energy production and industrial sector enterprises, farmers and energy sector experts.
