In order to raise the seriousness of the situation and call on everyone to ask themselves whether i have been vaccinated against diphtheria?, whether my children and relatives have been vaccinated?, the Ministry of Health and the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control are launching an information campaign “protected, because vaccinated!”, during which it is planned to develop information materials, implement educational measures in educational institutions, enterprises and social care centres, create a video advisor, who will explain how to protect themselves from diphtheria, as well as perform other public information activities.
Currently, in Latvia, the incidence of diphtheria has been the highest in the European Union for several years, but the 2015 data show that the vaccination coverage against diphtheria and tetanus in adults (over 25 years of age) was 65,31 TP1T (according to family doctors), adolescents at age 14 - 91%, children at age 7 - 97.41 TP1T. This means that approximately a third of adults have delayed the booster vaccination against diphtheria and each tenth teenager completes the school and starts an adult course without adequate protection against this life-threatening infectious disease. At the same time, the vaccine against diphtheria is state-paid and vaccination is the only way to protect themselves from this disease. More information on diphtheria (how to infection, symptoms, treatment etc.) is available under "Infectious diseases".
