The Academy of Technology and Partners of Rezekne - the municipality of Rezekne, the municipality of Ludza, the Municipality of Lephans, the municipality of Madona, the association “Latvian Innovators' Association”, the association “Biomass Technology Centre” organizes the forum “The sustainability dimensions of Latvia – educated people and the preservation of natural values”, which will be held 25 November 2016 at 11:30 Academy of Rēzekne Technology (Liberation Alliance 115).

The aim of the Forum is to explore, in a broad range of experts in the context of national sustainability, a comprehensive assessment and analysis of the systemic commitment of the quality of life, education, research and business environment, with particular emphasis on the resulting opportunities and risks in order to improve high-value environmental and regional policy in Latvia and Latgale.

Key words that provide more accurate insight into the content of a forum are:

  • education (general, middle and higher, as well as other degrees of education in formal and informal),
  • research,
  • environmental education,
  • environmental protection (conservation of ecosystems, development of environmental technologies),
  • sustainability.

In Rezekne's forum “Conservation of Latvia's sustainability dimensions – educated people and preservation of natural values”, the Minister for Environmental Protection and Regional Development Kaspars Gerhards, Vice-President of the Commission for Sustainable Development of the Saeima, Laimdota Straujuma, Vice-President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences Andrejs Krasņikov, President of Ludza District Council Alīna Gendele, Chairman OF the Rēzekne District Council, Monvīds Švarcs, Chairman of the Livani council Andris Vaivods, President of Madona District Council Andrejs Vaivodters, and Chairman of Rezekne council Alexander Bartazvičs.

On the role of Latgale Congress in the Latvian statehood, the demographic situation in Latgale, the role of environmental protection and preservation in the sustainable development of Latvia and Latgale, the institution of higher education as a factor in the sustainability of the region, as well as the presentation of all the interdisciplinary academic views of this topic will be presented by Janis Pleps, an advisor to the President of the State Constitutional Law, Juris Krums, the professor of Latvia's university, the Alda oak, the Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development in environmental protection issues, Edmunds Turumnieks, the rector of the Rēzekne Technology Academy, and Janis storm, the professor of Riga Stradins University, the President of the Council of Higher Education.

The second part of the forum will include two panels on “education and research as a factor of sustainability” and “environmental protection as an opportunity for education development, economic development and quality of life”.

The Forum in the Academy of Rēzekne Technology is the first of six Latvian environmental and natural values of the Latvian Environment Protection Fund “Latvia's sustainability dimensions – educated people and the preservation of natural values”.

In the course of the implementation of the project, three expert discussions will be held: Ludza (“how to link environmental protection initiatives with research and entrepreneurship?” Latgale municipality experience "), Madona (“ youth education for balanced development of Latvia, preservation of natural and cultural values ”) and Livans (“ transit and environmental protection ”).

On the other hand, the final forum of the project (“sustainability factors and preservation of natural values in Latvia's next hundred years”), which will provide a final report, summarising expert recommendations and conclusions on all six project initiatives, will be held at Latgale Congress's historical date, celebrating its reflection centuries, on April 28, 2017 in Rezekne.

The project “Sustainability of Latvia - educated people and preservation of natural values” is dedicated to the centuries of Latvia and is implemented with financial support from the Latvian Environment Protection Fund and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development.
