The municipality of Rezekne accepts the electrification of the Latvian rail network

On 19 February, the Rēzekne municipality council considered and accepted the submission of the State stock company Latvijas dzelzceļš regarding the electrification of the Latvian rail network. It is intended to perform the existing public railway line of the Latvian railway network – Riga-Tukums-Ventspils; Riga-Skulte; Riga-Jelgava; Riga-Krustpils-Daugavpils, Krustpils-Rēzekne, Krustpils-Jelgava and Jelgava-Tukums electrification, reconstructing the existing and constructing a new railway electrification (alternating current) system with a voltage of 1 x 25 kV or 2 x 25 kV and building 10, 11 or 17 traction power substations with the necessary 110 kV connections between 110 and 330 kV of the transmission network.
The planned activities “electrification of existing public and strategic (national) railway lines” VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš” links with strategic and long-term objectives of Latvia and the European Union for the development of the transport system and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from transport by refusing oil products in vehicle engines. The report states that the electrification of the Latvian rail network will bring positive benefits to Latvian society. Firstly, it will reduce environmental pollution caused by diesel emissions. Secondly, it will increase the competitiveness of the Latvian transit traffic sector, as this project allows to maintain competitive prices for freight transport by Latvian railways to Latvian large ports.
The possible implementation deadlines for the railway electrification project are 2016-2022.
