In modern society, one of the necessary skills is the ability to communicate with representatives of different peoples and cultures, the ability to adapt to a new environment, the ability to communicate on different topics. In order to achieve this successfully, one of the essential considerations is also the knowledge of good foreign languages. The non-profit organisation “AFS Latvia” for the development of language skills offers secondary students an opportunity to go into a learning exchange programme to the United States (USA).
Inese Diebele, co-ordinator of the AFS Latvia programme, emphasizes that the curriculum IN THE US is intended for motivated and targeted pupils to fill a dream of learning abroad. The program provides an opportunity to go to THE US, learn at a local country school, and live in a local family. It is an opportunity to gain intercultural experience, learn language, learn to live independently, and get good friends from around the world.
“One of the main advantages of going to THE US is that the knowledge of English can be strengthened very well here. As it is known, English is one of the languages we use throughout the world, so it is very important to know it. Young people who have already gone to English-speaking countries, such as THE US or the Philippines, recognise that it has been a really valuable experience and a strong language knowledge gained during one school year,” says I.Diebele.
To apply for a curriculum IN THE USA by 1 March of that year, filling in the application form “AFS Latvia” on the website www.afs.lv.
The programme may be applied for by any secondary school aged 15-17. For applications, candidates must first complete the application form on the www.afs.lv's website. You must then fill in the form of the exchange participant's application that is sent to each participant after filling out the application questionnaire on the website.
It is important to emphasise that there is still an open application for other “AFS Latvia” learning exchange programmes to European and South American countries. More information on the programmes is available on the website OF AFS Latvia.
“AFS Latvia” is a non-profit voluntary organisation providing intercultural learning opportunities for secondary schools in more than 50 countries. It represents the international association “AFS intercultural Programs”. The organization started operations in Latvia in 1990. Over the course of 26 years, more than 670 secondary students have entered the educational exchange programmes with the assistance of the organisation, while around 890 young people are taken from other countries.
