With a tempting smell of peppercakes, apples and meat smoked, with candle flames in the big festival spruce and cheers, the big Christmas fair in the municipality of Rezekne is taken by the sellers and buyers. The number of participants – domestic producers, craftsmen, peasants – was more than six dozens, so the trade places took place not only in the foyer of the building, but also in the large grass, where a real Christmas mood was held at the magnificent festive spruce, which was covered by THE presentation of THE folklore of THE folklore OF THE People's House OF Kaunatas. Also, the offer, as before the festival, was rich, the largest buyers of buyers formed at the meat-smoked and milk-based salesmen, but the fastest of the counter disappeared on the fishermen of the z/s “fishermen” (Nagļu parish). This time, more demand was also for craftsmen, handwriting and various souvenirs for Christmas gifts.
The farm “travellers” from Gaigalavas parish offered a non-traditional product – healthy gel butter, as well as seven types of cheeses with different spices. As the housewife Diana Skutele told, the household had started to do the farm only recently, and now also engaged in the direct purchase movement so that the buyers could order the delicious and healthy products directly from the farm. As always, there were apples that were offered by z/s “cherries” (Lendžu parish), z/s “Zemestkalni” (Rikavas civil parish) and z/s “Ezermala” (Čornajas civil parish), as well as z/s “Lukstinkai” (Ozolmuižas parish) vegetables. For the festival, many also purchased the wine of the vineyard Martha (Nagļu parish), made from rivers, cidonies, apples and pears. An innovative offer as WELL as a Griškānu parish house for Valentine Svarinska, which has started the production of various local herbs, was also missing.
There was a variety of educational seminars for entrepreneurs in the small hall. On THE success stories of THE LEADER programme in Rezekne municipality, the Executive Director of the “Rēzekne District Communities Partnership”, Ineta Brina, was informed of ALTUM's support programmes as an opportunity for business start and development to be informed by Vita Pučka, head of THE Latvian Development Financial Institution “Altum” Rēzekne branch.
On the other hand, the creative workshops were able to learn all kinds of Christmas stuff – the cooking of puzzles and congratulations, the cooking of peppers, the joining of happiness, and more.
The participants of the fair were invited to donate a gift to the foster families of Rezekne, and for this purpose there was a scale basket in the hall, which was filled with generous gifts.
The complex and diverse event was organised by the Europe Direct Information Centre in Eastern Latgale. As the head of the Centre Laura Ieshe emphasised, the European Union Member States increasingly focus on support of local farmers and domestic producers in order to protect them from increasing pressure from supermarkets, as well as to promote healthy and ecological food production. Direct trade and short supply chains, produced and produced without intermediaries, have become a significant element of rural development. This concept is also supported by the European Parliament, as it allows local agricultural holdings to obtain fairer revenue from the sold.
