The parish of Viļāni is bordered by Rikavas parish in the north of Rezekne, in the East with the municipality of Rēzekne, Sakstagala parish, partly along the coast of the Maltas River with Sokolki parish and the city of Viļāni, in the south with the Riebinu municipality of Galēni parish, in the west with Sīļukalna parish of Riebiņi municipality and the Dekšāres parish of Viļāni municipality. The parish area is crossed by the Maltas River in the south-north direction. There are three small lakes in the southern part of the parish: Viļānu, Radopoles and Notras. Parish crosses: Rēzekne-Jēkabpils highway and railway line Riga - Moscow built in 1901 as well as local roads: Viļāni-Gaigalava-Rēzekne; Viļāni-Castle-Nagles; Viļāni-Preiļi-Špoģi; Viļāni-Zabolotje-Maltas Trupi. The parish terrain is mostly flat and slightly wooded. Average height of the largest hills 120 – 130 m above sea level.

Viļānu parish history

Late 19 th century The THREE largest manors formed in THE parish area OF Viļānu: Radopola Manor – at the Radopol Lake Road to the Middle East (now Galenes), Viļānu Manor – in the south OF the city Maltas on the river bank, both owned by Janovsky, Maltas Manor – Varakļana on the side of the road, owned by Kārlis Lamster, was heavily devastated during the 1905 turmoil.

1935 Viļānu parish was bordered by the parish of Vidiguiža (now Galen), Rwanda, Gaigalavas, Varakalans, Sakstagala and Dricenes (now - Dricānu), with a total area of 208.8 km ², the population of 8500. The primary school was active in the alekaneropolis. "Golden School"There was Vilnius Forestry and the prayer of Rimmy Old Believers. There were small trades of goods and food in Tenans, oil mills in Janovsky mills, dairies and cream“ stock ”, as well as Vilnius, Truman, Brikua, Ornican and Medynski mills.

In 1936, Viļānu parish was added to the parish of Varakļani parish – the left shore of the Malta River, along with Christways. From 1945 to 1947, the Latvian SSR Rēzekne District of Viļāni parish included Radopols, Makuzu, Ornicans, Rikavas, Skudnovkas, Sokols (now Sokolku), Viļānu and Zirkaukas village Council, while the parish was liquidated in 1949. The village of the village of Radopole was located in Viļāni District (1947 – 1949) and Viļāni and Rēzekne (after 1962). In 1990, the council of the village of Radopole was reorganized and renamed the parish of Viļāni. In 2009, Viļāni parish was included as an administrative area in Viļāni municipality.

Natural resources

Three small lakes are located in the territory of Viļāni parish.
