The municipality of Rezekne joins the memorandum on the development of social work

On October 21, at the Rēzekne District Council, Members unanimously supported the accession of the municipality of Rezekne to the Memorandum of Understanding on the development of social work in municipalities. Upon receipt of the support, immediately after the meeting of the council, the chairman OF the council of Rezekne, Monvīds Švarcs, signed a memorandum.

The memorandum was prepared by the Latvian Association of Social Services of Latvia and the Latvian Social Workers Society, reminding Members of the role and significance of social work during this time.

When signing this memorandum, the members of the local government shall undertake during their term of office:

  • to provide sufficient administrative, financial and human resources to the social service and to involve social service in the planning of local government development and services;
  • in cooperation with the management of the social service of the municipality, to develop the knowledge and skills of social workers, to provide for adequate remuneration for their investors, to take care of a modern working environment for the social service and premises where the needs of both social workers and social service clients are observed,
  • ensure timely, full and systematic cooperation between municipal management and all levels of institutions involved with social services, particularly in the areas of health, education, employment and public order.

“A successful social function in local government means people's well-being and opportunities to realise their potential, healthy relationships between people and groups of citizens, as well as a sustainable local community,” said Silvia Strankale, head of the Rēzekne District Service.

On behalf of Latvian social workers and their clients, the memorandum was signed by the head of the board of directors of the Latvian Association of Social Services of Latvia Behmane and Latvian Social Workers' Association.
