AS “Nagļi”
AS “Nagļi” is a fish farming complex engaged in the breeding and sale of fish, particularly carp. The Nagļi fishery covers an area of approximately 2,000 hectares, comprising ponds, dams, the land occupied by the hatchery and workshops, and the Malta River reservoir, which supplies water to all the fishery's ponds.
Construction of the first ponds in Nagļi began in 1965. On June 25, 1968, the "Nagļi" Soviet fishery enterprise was established by a decision of the Council of Ministers of Latvia. Over the more than 40 years of its existence, the enterprise has changed its name several times. Since its privatization in 2000, it has operated as the joint-stock company "Nagļi". Currently, JSC "Nagļi" is the largest fish farm not only in Latvia but in the entire Baltic region. It is a full-cycle fish farm that maintains its own broodstock for carp and pike, and carries out the entire process—from incubation and the rearing of fry to the production of market-ready fish.
All the Nagļi ponds were constructed in the former wetlands of Lake Lubāns, resulting in a peaty pond bed. This dictates the choice of fish species raised there—specifically, those that do not perish in the silt during harvesting. Consequently, 99% of the farmed fish are carp. Pike, crucian carp, and tench are also raised. Recently, consideration has been given to the possibility of farming trout, perch, catfish, and other species.
Opening hours: Live carp can be purchased daily from 8:00 to 17:00.
