On Monday, June 2, representatives of Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian finance ministries meet in Riga to share their experiences on the planning of European Union (EU) funds during the next 2014-2020 period. During the meeting, experts are discussing the European Commission's (EC) comments on the draft EU funds for the 2014-2020 programming period programming documents - Partnership Contracts and Operational Programmes.

“In order to be able to approach the average level OF EU countries with confidence, the Baltic States must be able to make smart and skilled use of the opportunities provided BY EU funds. At present, when the planning documents of the new programming period are at the final stage of approval in all three Baltic States, the discussion and exchange of experience are of particular importance. More recent works are to be carried out in order to be able to prepare for the next programming period and to ensure that the EU fund projects implemented increase the welfare of the country and the population,” says Finance Minister Andris Vilks.

Currently, there is an active work on the official approval OF EU funds for the 2014-2020 programming documents in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. All three Baltic States have now achieved similar progress in the approval of documents. According TO THE EC's estimates, all Baltic States' partnership agreements IN THE EC could be approved in the coming months, Latvia already in June. The approval of operational programmes stems from the time of approval of the partnership agreements.

It has been previously reported that in the framework of the partnership agreement Latvia and THE EC continued discussions on Latvia's environmental priorities, a business support scheme that applies to small and medium-sized enterprises. As well as issues in research and innovation, digital growth, energy efficiency, waste management, transport and education.

The draft programming documents follow the link to THE EU 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, National Development Plan 2020, as well as other programming documents. The strategic vision is based on the analysis of gaps and needs, while the solutions focus on effective, sustainable development and results. The priority directions and specific support objectives defined in the programming documents focus on the achievement of concrete results, leading to the greatest return on economic development and the improvement of the quality of life of the population.
