European Capital of Culture from 2020 to 2033 - > 2027 in Latvia!

22.06.2017

Projects

Each year, two Member States can choose the European Capital of Culture, but Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland will also be able to participate in the programme every three years.
The European Capital of Culture programme aims at promoting cultural wealth and diversity and strengthening the sense of belonging of citizens to a single cultural area. The cultural programme and the investments made within it, in turn, contribute to the sustainable development of cities. According to the approved list, one of Latvia's cities will become a European Capital of Culture in 2027.
Choice of European Capital of Culture
Six years before the start of the cultural capital programme, the country will select the selection of the city. An independent Member State and a European panel of experts select a number of candidate cities. In the second round of the selection, the jury chooses one city from each country, taking into account the European dimension of the cultural programme offered and the link to sustainable urban development.
The decision was supported by 606 Members, 54 votes against, and six abstained.
The European Capital of Culture programme has strengthened the sense of belonging and links between EU citizens. I am very pleased with the extension of the programme today, which will make it possible to build closer ties with our neighbours, "said THE EP rapporteur. Santiago Fisas Ayxelà.
