Projects

The European Parliament's Information Office (EPIB) competition “Internet Security IQ Test” won the Riga 34 th Secondary School team in collaboration with professional programmer with a mobile app aimed at raising the knowledge and awareness of children and young people on the Internet.

Mobile app will be free to use Android “systems in smartphones and tablets (search under the key words “Internet Security IQ”). In cooperation with experts and responsible institutions, the “Internet security IQ test” will be promoted in educational institutions throughout Latvia. The mobile app includes question blocks for four age groups ranging from 6 to 16 years. At the same time, experts invite anyone, especially older users, to try it.
Artis Pabriks, Member of the European Parliament from the responsible Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE): “a very good and very public work is done, and this is done in parallel with what we do in the European Parliament. We have adopted the Data Protection Regulation, young people have created a new mobile app. We are taking a really one step forward in protecting our privacy. It is worth adding that this initiative and the work carried out in the pupils have become more active citizens. I call for such opportunities to continue to be used, both at both Latvian and European level, and we will all have the skills to use the Internet safely and find a good job."
EPIB Head March Ribel: “with this project for pupils, their parents and faculty for a cool summer virtual running!” We are proud of the result – the mobile app is the “hand-to-hand” of young people who are under the supervision of the professional, but with the enthusiasm, fiction and work of the young people themselves. This is the first application in the Latvian language designed to promote awareness and to increase the safe use of the Internet. “She also congratulates the winner team:“ the satisfaction that the Riga 34 th High School's informatics teacher took the initiative and participated with the team in a competition where the main prize was the opportunity to get such useful programming skills in partnership with professional professionals today. ”
“The mobile app is also important for more efficient communication of data country inspections with children and young people whose future of Latvia in the digital era will need to be built,” stresses Director of the Data State Inspectorate Daiga Avdejanova. “For the younger generation, information on the protection of data and privacy should be provided in accordance with the requirements of the age - the tools that are understandable for this generation must be used.“ Internet security IQ test ”is probably one of the most effective ways for understandable communication: first, it is designed as a game; secondly, it has been developed by young people themselves for other young people, taking into account the specificities of each age group and using expressions and examples addressing the specific age groups.”
Fact: 40% Latvian children and young people are using the Internet almost every day, and they are being used by younger users.
“At the site www.drossinternets.lv we regularly receive requests for help in situations where intimate photo or personal information is leaked on the Internet when money is pressed when someone unauthorised has accessed social network profiles and in many other cases, which could also not happen if the victim had been a more knowledgeable and more careful Internet user. A large proportion of the test issues include topics which, from our experience, represent the most important risks for Internet users, ”explains Secure Internet Center (“net-Safe Latvia”) Head of May Katkovsky.
“I am pleased that young people have invested in the creation of such a useful mobile app. The subject covered is topical because most of them have the most important communication device. I hope that this app will be developed and developed to be an interesting knowledge test tool for other young people. It has a reason to become an exciting and educational game! technology blogger Kursors.lv Chief Editor Kristaps Skutelis.
On THE reform OF EU data
The new laws will replace THE EU's current data protection rules, which were developed in 1995, when the Internet was still a “baby girl” and will provide citizens with more control over their private information in a digitised world consisting of smartphones, social media, internetbanks etc. At the same time, the rules also seek to provide predictability to businesses in order to stimulate innovation and develop the single digital market.
On the new rules, THE EU legislators - the European Parliament and THE Council of THE EU (Member States) agreed in spring 2016. Major innovation to be seen infographic:
• before any personal data are stored, the explicit consent of the person must be obtained;
• The information must be in plain language and easily read.
• the person has the right to be forgotten;
• for a child to open an account in social media until the age of 13-16 years (at the choice of EU Member State), parental consent is required;
• firms handling significant amounts of data must be the data protection officer responsible for the process;
• The violation of data protection rules will be subject to stricter penalties, etc.
In short, the purpose of the mobile app “Internet security IQ”:
• to promote pupils' awareness of safer Internet usage;
• to introduce EU rules on data protection;
• Promote “secure Internet” experts;
• provide parents and teachers with a practical and accessible tool for young people, including the opening of a call for security on the Internet;
• create a unique project in Latvia – “Internet security IQ test” mobile app and show that it can be done by students!
Legislative process IN THE EU
THE EP and THE COUNCIL of THE EU, headed by Latvia in the first half of 2015, jointly adopt EU laws in many areas (e.g. economic governance, energy, transport, environment and consumer protection), which is then a basis FOR eu national laws, such as in Latvia up to 80% law based on EU decisions. Although the European Commission (EC) is the only EU legislative initiator, THE EP can indicate what legislation would be desirable and ask THE EC for legislative proposals.
