“The Latvian School Chess Olympics Project is implemented in collaboration with Latvian Chess Federation. The aim is to find out how many schools in Latvia can play chess, how many schools have a chess or a chess hour? And how to help those schools in Latvia who want to introduce a chess to their pupils daily? Such joint forces promote chess as a game, a way of spending leisure in youth, as well as promoting cooperation between chess trainers, sharing experience and identifying the best young people in the chess in each region and Latvia. We were invited to participate in all Latvian schools with one chess fan who is willing to participate in these ambitious chess competitions and represent the honour of the school, and the responsiveness is unexpected. Special attention should be given to regional schools that are so active in setting up participants, setting up new chess pools and revealing the new talents of this ancient game,“ a member of the board of directors of “Latvian Chess Federation” Ilmārs busms.

Three stages are foreseen for the Latvian School Chess Olympics, with the 3 best boys and 3 best girls in three age groups, class 1-4, class 5-9 and class 10-12 who will participate in regional finals in the 1 st phase from 1 to 31 March. The school's inner chess tournaments were also organised to identify the best students.

In each region of the region, the 3 best boys and the 3 best girls in the above-mentioned age groups will be cleared who will win the right to participate in Latvia's final. There are 7 games with time control for 12 minutes and 5 seconds for a move.

In the 3 rd phase, or in the Latvian School Chess Olympics finals on May 15, Riga Juglas High School, the strongest school chess of all 5 participating regions will meet. Latvian Finals were able to apply separately for all chess pupils with at least I sports class in chess, while players are allowed to participate in Latvian sports classes in chess. It is planned that Latvia's school in the chess Olympics will meet around 300 children.

The Latvian School Chess Olympics will also be a good practice for the strongest Latvian school chess championships before Riga's most ambitious event of this year – European Youth Championship in the chess age groups U8 to U18.
