There are 43 landscapes from the Latgale planning region, with 200 landscape applications from the other 4 Latvian planning regions, to determine the 10 most important Latvian landscapes from each region via the website. www.ainavudargumi.lvwhich will form the treasure storage of Latvian landscapes.
The first step of the activity was already completed - by July 15, 928 applications were received with Latvian landscape treasure, including 193 from Latgale Planning Region. These were evaluated, the most beautiful and landscaped locations of Latvia, taking into account their visual value and significance in the history of Latvia. Now out of 243 landscapes, 50 most important ones are to be selected, for which additional information will be collected in the treasure store of the Latvian National Library and the exhibition is prepared.
By 15 October, we invite everyone to express their views on the website www.landscape dargumi.lv  (in the “map” or “list” section), selecting the most characteristic Latgale landscapes. It is important to remember that the total number of selected landscapes should not exceed 50. In addition, a maximum of 10 landscapes should be selected from each region (if more than 10 landscapes are selected in any planning region, the website will be displayed).
At the same time, all 243 selected landscape treasures in accordance with the specificities of their sector will be assessed by the institutions and organisations represented in the Landscape Expert Council. In turn, the planning regions will compile the assessments of the Council of the public and landscape experts. The overall assessment of the most important 10 landscape treasures of each region is expected to be known in mid-November.
In late 2017 and early 2018, additional information will be collected for the 50 most important landscapes to reflect the change of landscape over several decades – both historical photography and memory stories. In the year of Latvia's anniversary, these landscape treasures will be memorized by inviting professional photographers. There will be an exhibition and discussion in each region that will talk about what Latvia wants to see in the next hundredths and what to do to achieve the desired goal.
* The council of landscape experts includes representatives from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Culture, State Inspection for Heritage Protection, Environmental Protection Administration, Latvian Investment and Development Agency, Latvian National Library, Latvian University, Latvian Local Government Union, Latvian Large City Association, Association of Regional Development Centres, Latvian Architecture Union and Latvian Landscape Architectural Society.
About activity:
Within the framework of the centennial celebrations of Latvia, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, in co-operation with the National Library of Latvia, local government libraries and planning regions, organises an activity “gift for Latvia - electronic landscape treasure storage“ Latvian landscape treasure yesterday, today, tomorrow ”. It aims to promote the preservation of quality and multifunctional landscapes that improve the quality of life of people throughout Latvia, promote the economic activity and visibility of places, regions and countries.
By involving all Latvian residents, the treasure of Latvia's landscapes will be identified - places and territories in rural areas, villages and cities which are identified as special values of Latvia and its regions, regardless of their current protection status and the degree of preservation. By identifying the most beautiful and valuable landscapes, it will also be considered for inclusion in the Latvian cultural canton, which is a sign of Latvia's pride and honour.
