On Tuesday, 2 September, the Cabinet of Ministers will decide on the approval of the “growth and employment” programme of the 2014-2020 programming period. The operational programme defines the principles of investment in the European Union (EU) Funds, the results to be achieved and the areas of support for the next seven years.

“The improvement of the operational programme and the negotiations between the Ministry of Finance, the European Commission and all the partners involved have contributed to a serious effort. The goal has been to achieve a balanced contribution of EU funds to the priority directions set by Latvia. It is important to approve the operational programme in the Cabinet of Ministers today so that it can be submitted to the European Commission for approval in September and to launch an effective, effective and sustainable development of projects aimed at sustainable development in Latvia,” says Finance Minister Andris Vilks.

In the process of co-ordination of the operational programme Latvia has reached agreement on several comments made by the European Commission (EC), making clarifications and reviewing the initial allocation of Latvia and its priorities. The agreement foresees that eur 1.2 billion will be invested in the transport sector from €4.4 billion, which will be available for Latvia within the next seven years. While maintaining the total amount of investments planned in the transport sector, it has also been possible to safeguard financing for the reconstruction of regional roads, which was initially opposed BY THE EC. THE EC also advocates the total amount of investment planned in the field of health which, according to FM estimates, is expected to improve the provision of health care services in 775 medical treatment institutions over the next few years. An agreement has also been reached on the allocation of funding in the area of social inclusion, the reduction of the unemployment rate, the acquisition of young people's work experience, the creation of new jobs.

Currently, projects that will receive co-financing from the new programming period have already been launched in vital programmes. These are projects involving social support and employment as well as road reconstruction.

The operational programme respects the link with THE EU 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, the National Development Plan 2020, as well as other programming documents. The strategic vision is based on the analysis of gaps and needs. The defined priority axes and specific support objectives focus on the achievement of concrete results, leading to the greatest return on economic development and the improvement of the quality of life of the population.
