Wifi4eu: a new EU scheme for free internet access

02.10.2017

Projects
In short:

  • Meps approve EU scheme for free WiFi access points in public places
  • Specific measures for the protection of personal data

A funding scheme for free wireless internet access will be implemented IN the EU in the near future.
EU funding for the implementation of the scheme is intended to be “geographically balanced” by selecting projects in the order of submission. This will allow more than 6000 public places across THE EU (hospitals, libraries etc.) to provide free wireless internet.
Eligibility criteria and other conditions
For funding, project promoters will have to provide access points for at least three years. EU funding will only be available if the project does not contain ads and user data is not used for profit. Projects that are already in operation in a similar area will not be supported under this scheme.
EP rapporteur Carlos Zorrinho (S & D, Portugal): The WIFI4EU initiative was a political idea that will soon become a reality across THE EU. Regardless of residence and income, Europeans will have access to high-quality wireless internet. It will strengthen European gigabyte society, making it economically competitive and inclusive
Next steps: The resolution was approved by 582 votes against 98, with nine abstentions.
