The Rēzekne municipality council, along with the other 27 partners, participates in the activities of the European Union “Europe for Citizens” project “European Voice Challenging euroscepticism” (Latvian: European voices call Euroscepticism). The leading partner of the project is the Municipality of the Autonomous Community of Galicia (ROIs). The project implementation period is from November 2021 to June 2022.

Euroscepticism or critical opinions on the European Union increased significantly during the 2014 European Migration Crisis. Within the framework of the project, discussions are held on the causes and consequences of Euroscepticism, involving European Union citizens, non-governmental organisations, education and youth centres. One of the four discussions took place between 13 and 14 February Maltā, where the main focus was on immigration problems. Particularly valuable information was received from local governments – on real work with immigrants, their reception, medical examinations, psychologists' work, accommodation etc. TO work with refugees, Malta has created a fairly complex but supportive system. MR Azzopardi, Mayor of Mars, analysed very much the problems of the reception process of immigrants, which must also be known in the work of the municipality of Rezekne, taking into account the current geopolitical situation in the eastern border of the European Union and the need to accommodate refugees.

As a benefit from project activities, it is important not only to experience experience but also to create new international contacts for future cooperation. I believe it is extremely important to see how other municipalities are working in the European Union, to carry out experience in their work, to share other achievements. Invite our local government employees, specialists, every citizen to take advantage of the opportunities given by projects and support experience in other European countries.

Erik Turumer,
Deputy Chairman of the Rēzekne District Council
