Quality of drinking water after strong rain in Latgale

The Health Inspectorate calls on the population of the affected areas to pay particular attention to the quality of drinking water used for food. The people using local water abstraction and drinking water from shallow acids and spickets must be particularly cautious. Customers of centralised water supply systems may be safer because underground drilling is more protected and water suppliers take care of compliance with the protection measures of water abstraction sites.
During the heavy rain, local drinking water sites may be contaminated by surface waters, often with sewage waters. The use of such contaminated water in food without treatment may cause health problems. The use of cooked or prepacked drinking water is recommended.
Additional information on the quality of drinking water, its potential pollution and preventive measures, is available on the inspection website www.vi.gov.lv under environmental health – drinking water – the quality of drinking water and its potential pollution as a result of floods.

The information was prepared by: Press secretary of the Bureau of Health Inspectorate Catherine Vīksna, in cooperation with the public health monitoring department.
