Dricānu secondary school students learn about climate change
On 7 January, in spite of the cold time, AT Dricānu High School, the technical creative workshops on climate change took place throughout the course of the school. The pupils participated in a total of two specially designed and prepared technical workshops that presented and explained, in detail, what climate change and related challenges and solutions are.
IN the first technically creative workshop, Dricānu pupils learned about the causes and consequences of climate change, which currently affects almost all residents of Latvia and the world. In contrast, in the second workshop, students had the opportunity to further understand the various measures to be taken to adapt to the negative effects of climate change. The participants and teachers of the technical creative workshops also gained a specially designed informative booklet for young people on climate change.
More about the technically creative workshops, the project manager Ginth Greenberg: “all workshops are interdisciplinary, that is, high school students had the opportunity to use the knowledge acquired in other subjects, such as algebra, physics, chemistry, geography. In workshops, a theoretical narrative was followed by practical work, addressing tasks, conducting experiments and measurements, observations, analysis and conclusions. It should be noted that all workshops are based on real international research and statistics, thus maximising both activities and their results for the real climate change situation in Latvia and the world.
THE event was also recognised BY Dricānu secondary school students. Victoria Samule, Lauma Moses, Valerie Shodnaka and Wilma Colney said, “It is sad to know that we and the world are doing things.” These workshops made it clear that our attitude towards the world and nature was of great importance because they would not want to celebrate Christmas at +20 degrees after several years! '
Pupils Amanda Kalvāne, Janis Lebanon, Daiga Troška, Caitty Kindzule and Lauma Colnee say, “We want to thank you for the fact that the organisers of the technically creative workshops visited us and let students spend the day creative.” It was interesting and exciting to participate in experiments, as well as to find out a lot of new information on climate change. Pupil Ivars Usan adds, “It was pleasant to see young people, new faces, and practice. That day was definitely different from the day of the usual school.
A total of 70 schools in all five regions of Latvia will be held until April of the following year. In workshops, 4000 Latvian secondary students will learn more about climate change and playing games on climate change. The workshops have been developed and implemented by SIA “Aspired”, which has been active in the workshop market in Latvia and beyond for 3 years.
The tourism of the technically creative workshops is carried out within the framework of the project “green mission: climate”, which aims to increase the knowledge and capacity of the partners involved in the project by taking over foreign experience, as well as by integrating and using alternative education approaches and methods, educating, informing and promoting Latvian secondary school, natural sciences teachers, Latvian general educational institutions, Latvian educational institutions and knowledge of climate change in order to promote their involvement in the prevention of climate change and the implementation of policy measures related to adaptation to climate change.
The project will be implemented within the framework of the European Economic Area Financial Instrument 2009-2014 period programme “National Climate Policy” in the framework of open competition and planned to be completed by 30 April 2016. The total cost of the project is EUR 189 403.00, where the co-financing of the programme is 166 035,00 EURO, while the co-financing is EUR 23 368,00,00.
