Pupils will do environmentally friendly bags and bags as a sustainable alternative to plastic procurement bags

In promoting the reduction of the consumption of plastic bags, the “green belt” involves students of Latvian educational institutions in the creative competition “I start with ourselves – clean Latvia!”. In the course of the competition, children and young people are invited to explore possibilities to replace plastic purchasing bags with more environmentally friendly solutions for packing and co-production, and to create their own unique purchasing bags, which are made up of secondary raw materials as far as possible.
In response to the large number of applications, the registration of the participants of the competition “I started with myself – clean Latvia!” by 18 March of that year has been extended. The competition “I start with myself – clean Latvia!” is invited to apply for teams from Latvian general and pre-school educational institutions. The task of the competition is to design a green-friendly and stylish purchase bag or bag design, self-produce this bag, as well as present its performance at the educational institution, encouraging the rest of the day to replace plastic bags with environmentally friendly alternatives.
According to the data of the European Union, one resident in the year wastes an average of 31 kg of plastic packaging, representing 15,8 million tonnes of plastic waste per year throughout the European Union. In Latvia, the average volume of plastic packaging per year is 35 900 tonnes, of which approximately 14 493 tonnes or 40.91 TP1T are processed. One citizen of the European Union (EU) consumes approximately 200 disposable plastic bags per year. Together, EU citizens consume 100 billion bags per year. Latvia's indicators are close TO THE average level of THE EU - each resident of Latvia consumes approximately 190 single plastic bags per year.

Although the restrictions on free distribution of plastic bags have entered into force since 1 January of that year, environmental benefits are insufficient - it is essential to provide the public with environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives, the“ green belt ”manager Janis fox.
“I started with myself – clean Latvia!” in collaboration with the national education content centre, the fashion and entertainment centre “Riga Plaza”, the Ogre State Technical School, the Decorative Arts and Design Museum, the municipal SIA 'Ventspils Replacement Combate' and the environmentally friendly Finnish producer Zigi Bags.
