Europeans still support THE EU's response to the energy crisis

A new Eurobarometer survey published today shows that most EU citizens welcome recent EU measures to overcome the energy crisis.

In particular, more than eight out of ten EU citizens, or 82 %, agree that THE EU should continue to act to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels. A significant majority of respondents, or 83 %, believe that Russia's war against Ukraine makes it more urgent to invest in renewable energies. 87 % respondents consider it essential to protect critical infrastructure, such as pipelines and internet cables, and 83 % also agrees that the price of electricity should not be dependent on gas prices.

Most respondents (85 %) claim that the increase in energy prices has affected their purchasing power. 56 % agrees with the assertion that the recent price increase is mainly related to the aggressive behaviour of Russia, but 38 % does not agree with that assertion.

49 % respondents consider that the measures taken BY THE EU to improve the economic situation will have positive effects, 18 % – that they will have negative effects, but 22 % – that they will have no impact.

The respondents themselves have already acted or would be prepared to take action to reduce energy consumption and energy bills, which could be achieved mainly by turning off the light when there is no (77 %) in the room, disconnecting the electronic devices when they are not used (62 %) and lowering room temperature (58 %).

The measures taken BY THE EU in response to Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine are still strongly supported BY EU citizens. They are massive support for humanitarian aid (88 %) and the reception of people fleeing war (82 %). Seven of the ten respondents support economic sanctions against the Russian government, companies and individuals (71 %) and provide financial support to Ukraine (70 %). In addition, the majority of the population also supports the financing of the state-owned Russian media (63 %) and the financing of military equipment and supplies to Ukraine (59 %).
