EU news

Today, THE EU concluded an agreement with the United Kingdom on fishing opportunities for 2023 for fish stocks shared with the United Kingdom in the north-east Atlantic.

The Agreement will contribute to the sustainable management of the jointly managed fish stocks in the waters of the two Parties and to the stability and predictability of the fleets and operators. This applies to more than 74 items and Fishing opportunities for THE EU fleet of more than 350,000 tonnes; estimated Value after historic landing prices (adjusted with inflation) is about 1 billion EURO.

This agreement concludes the third annual eu-united Kingdom consultation on fishing opportunities based on: Eu-united Kingdom trade and cooperation agreement (TSN) rules. It covers all joint and shared fisheries resources IN EU and United Kingdom waters, with respect to the common stocks, as well as reciprocal access to albacore tuna by setting the total allowable catch (TAC) limits for 2023.

The Agreement shall be based on: best available scientific advice on the status of fish stocks provided by International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Tas take into account important principles of sustainability and governance as maximum sustainable yield (MSY) and a cautious approach to THE EU common fisheries policy (CFP) and THE TSN Fisheries Division.

In addition, the Parties committed to work in a number of specific working directions WITHIN THE EU and United Kingdom specialised fisheries committee to improve the sustainable management of common fish stocks in the next year (reviewing also the conservation of sensitive stocks in all marine basins).

Next steps

The agreed catch limits will be included by the Council in the 2023 Fishing Opportunities Regulation, on which a political agreement was reached at the recent EU Fisheries Council.

In 2023, the Parties will hold consultations on three other jointly managed stocks for which the scientific advice is not in accordance with the calendar year: for sprat (North Sea and Channel) and sandeel (North Sea, all banks).
