The European Union was represented by the President of the European Commission Urzula fon der Leiena and Commissioner for International Partnership Felt Urcastle. They emphasised the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on children's education worldwide and the commitment of the European Union and its Member States to act.

President of the European Commission Urzula fon der Leiena said: “Education is the most elementary basis for human development. Reading, writing, mathematics, logic, digital skills, understanding life – whatever continent we live in, education must be truly universal. For this reason, the European Union is investing more in international cooperation in the field of education than the rest of the world together. And in these unusual times we will intensify our efforts.

Commissioner for International Partnership Felt Urcastle said,We are determined not to allow Covid-19 to destroy the progress made over decades by improving access to education and our words are followed by works. With eur 1.7 billion, the European team proud to be the largest donor to global partnership for education and supports free, inclusive and high-quality education, which is equally accessible to all. Education accelerates progress towards achieving all the objectives of sustainable development and education will play an important role in the economic recovery process. With all our partners, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and succeed. '

European team for global education

EU support for education is aimed at ensuring quality, equality and justice and ensuring that skills are aligned with jobs. This means, in particular:

  • investing in well-trained and motivated teachers who can give children the right set of skills needed in the 21 st century. By 2030, at least 69 million young teachers, including more than 17 million teachers in Africa, will have to be recruited in primary and secondary education institutions;
  • investment in equality, particularly the promotion of girls' education and the potential of digital innovation. The education of girls and the provision of full opportunities to them is a crucial aspect OF THE EU Gender Equality Action Plan III, which aims at halting the increase in the inequalities found in the pandemic and accelerating progress in promoting gender equality and women's opportunities;
  • investing in future skills to prepare specialists, business leaders and decision-makers who will be needed in the future in the field of green transition and digital transformation.

The European team's approach to the European Union and its Member States creates the necessary scale and provides the necessary coordination and concentration, which helps to maximise the overall impact in order to open up educational opportunities for each child.

Context

Global Education Summit GPE financing in 2021-2025

The Global Education Summit is a conference that complemented the resources devoted to global partnership for education: the only global, education-related partnership involving representatives from all stakeholder groups active in the field of education, including partner countries, donors, international organisations, civil society groups, foundations and the private sector.

The global partnership for education is managed by the world bank and provides financial support to low-income and middle-income countries, particularly those with a large number of children who do not attend school, and where there is considerable gender inequality. Most of the funding is allocated to Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2014-2020, the European Union and its Member States provided more than half of all GPE allocated funds.
