Identity card (eID card) as mandatory identity document and identification tool

As from 1 May 2023, the identity card (eID card) will be a mandatory personal identification document for a Latvian citizen and a non-citizen who has reached the age of 15.
Amendments to the Law on Personal Identification Documents stipulate that residents of Latvia who have expired from 1 March 2020 will be able to use these documents for the implementation of their fundamental rights within the State until 30 April 2023. Thus, during that period, people with documents that have expired no earlier than 1 March 2020 will be able, for example, to receive services in the field of health, welfare, social, education, law enforcement, and to participate in the Saeima elections.
(Amendments to the Law on Personal Identification Documents)
the eID card is a personal identification document or electronic identification tool for the service of services in a digital and physical environment. The eID card will become a universal key for access to public administration and private sector services in 2023, allowing remote settlement of formalities, signing contracts, managing their finances, paying bills in the Internet banking, using their official electronic address in the portal Latvija.lv, and digitally authenticating identity in the form of local services such as public transport. Given that many public and private sector services are easily accessible digitally, it is necessary to provide citizens with the opportunity to access them freely, with a secure digital solution - eID card.
