Mākoņkalns - the hill in clouds
In the Middle Ages, Volkenberg Castle was located on Mākoņkalns, the ruins of which still remain. It was the oldest Crusader fortress in the Lotigol land, which the Livonian Order acquired after the final division of Jersika in 1239.
Mākoņkalns, also called Padebešu kalnas, is located near Lake Rāzna (249 m above sea level). In 1252, the Livonian Order built one of the first fortifications in Latgale – Volkenberg Castle – on the top of this hill. Only fragments of the large defensive wall and the collapsed underground passage have survived to this day. The hill offers a wonderful view of Lake Rāzna and the small Ubagova Lake. There are stairs to the top of the hill.
There is information that there was a wooden castle here as early as 1236. There are indications of the use of the castle mound as early as 1347 and 1350; the castle was destroyed in the battles with the Lithuanians in the 14th and 15th centuries and was never restored.
