Z.O.S. - Winter Olympics in Verems
On August 2, AN unusual competition -- Z.O.S. winter Olympic Games — took place in THE Vērēmu parish. The competitions were organized by “foot-to-air”, as winter sports were “suitable” for summer using unusual sports equipment such as grain, gifts, film etc. The total included 6 teams from Ilzeskalna, Ozolaines, Ozolmuižas, Vērēmiem and two teams from Rezekne.
The participants had to perform ten non-traditional sporting tasks, in which the teams tested cohesion, enthusiasm and success. “Biatlone”, “bobsley”, “Salaveu run for gifts”, “snow-pike battle”, “Quick Hockey”, “petanka” etc. The most interesting and exciting sports discipline was “cameras” – the participants had to drag themselves through the film, which was wetted with soap. On the other hand, the most lucky discipline was bobsley, because the team split into pairs, each pair had to bring their team to a particular distance, as the entire distance was divided into three stages. The team who performed the distance in shorter time won.
The struggle for diplomas, medals and clubs was very strong. For the winners, THE S.O.S. sports games became THE “OZO” team of Ozolaines, 2 nd place FOR the parish team OF Ozolmuižas, 3 rd place for the city team of Rezekne – “New Bee”.
The competitions took place thanks to the projects of the Rēzekne municipality's youth initiatives in 2014. Hopefully this kind of sports festival will become a Vērēmu parish tradition!
