Until June 28, the Latvian Forest Owners' Association (LMIS) competitions “Sakopoiest Forest” are allowed to apply. The aim of the competition is to promote sustainable forest management and identify examples of good forestry practices in private forests, as well as to promote public awareness of the preservation of the rural cultural environment.
This year, the competition prize fund consists of a practicable motor vehicle for the generation of young generations and two gift cards for the harvesting of forest planting or ornamental material, which will be distributed among the three most valued forest property owners. Similarly, the three top-rated owners will be nominated for the prestigious forest sector annual balor “gold champion” in the nomination “for sustainable farming”.
Last year, the competition was held for a second year, and the big prize, the “gold chiefs” for sustainable farming, was received by Madar Kalniņš, who in his woods, Naukenes, conducts “ants”.
As regards the importance of the “Sakopoiest Forest” competition, Madar Kalniņš emphasizes: “The daily part of society is so isolated from those processes that occur in nature and in the forest that it is not always able to understand what is happening in the forest sector. We must therefore take care of the education of society. '
During the competition, examples of good forestry practices are identified, assessing the contribution of forest owners to the creation of productive and sustainable forest stands, cleaning methods, the use of forest infrastructure, the use of scientifically justified methods in sustainable forest management, the planning of landscape elements, as well as interaction with neighbours and local government. The course of the competition also contributes to the public understanding of what sustainable forest management means and why it is necessary in Latvian forests.
“For our forests to be sustainable, they must be managed on a regular basis, with great responsibility and a sustainable view in every action. Therefore, i believe it is important to thank those owners who treat their forest management with great care and try to use scientifically-based methods against their forest management,” explains THE Chairman of THE BOARD of GOVERNORS of LMIPs, Arnis Muižnieks.
