“Warm sweater day” also Dricānu in secondary school

Projects

On February 16, that year, schools, companies and other organisations are invited to participate in the annual “warm sweater day”. The aim of the promotion is to educate the public about climate change and promote more environment and climate-friendly habits. In the warm sweater day, schools are slightly reduced in temperatures and all are invited to wear a warmer sweater, which also symbolically confirms the support for the initiative. In addition, schools also organise various other educational events and integrate the topic of climate change in learning hours.
The campaign started in 2005 when the Flemish Region Ecools, inspired by the Kyoto Protocol, held the first warm sweater day. Its initial idea was to remind the target of climate change mitigation, calling for simple daily activities, such as reducing heating capacity and making a warmer jumper, more often driving with bicycles, eating local food, excluding electrical appliances when we do not use them, and other similar initiatives. This day managed to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions from the Flemish area as well as to promote awareness among students, entrepreneurs and authorities of the problem of climate change.
The warm sweater day is used as a tool for networking between schools, organisations, businesses, municipalities and even national governments to contribute collectively to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and tackling climate change. Also this year the Eco-Schools are ready to participate actively in the campaign. Many of them are planning not only to implement the unifying activity – the reduction of air temperature in premises – but also to involve other local organisations, to address the public, to organise discussions and competitions on the subject of climate, to organise activities outside, thereby saving electricity resources, and many other activities.

The Ecoschool programme is one of the most comprehensive and effective models of environmental education in the world. At least 51 000 participating schools in 67 countries are active in the EcoSchools programme, while in Latvia there are already more than 200 educational institutions in Latvia – not only schools but also pre-schools and universities. These schools are actively working to involve pupils in action-oriented learning. They contribute to the awareness and skills of young people to make a positive change that contributes to sustainable development.
