The elections of the Rēzekne municipality WILL NOT BE HELD on 5 June

In accordance with decision No 29 of the Central Election Commission (CVK) of 28 May 2021, the decision of the Central Election Commission No. 3 of 21 January 2021 on the election of the municipal council, which refers to the announcement of the elections of the municipality of Rezekne, is repealed. The elections of the Rēzekne municipality will not be held on 5 June 2021! THE DECISION of THE CVK was taken in compliance with the judgment of the Constitutional Court of 28 May 2021, which states that the addition of the Varakalani municipality to the municipality of Rezekne does not comply with the Constitution.

Similarly, THE CVK decided today to cancel the elections in Madona municipality, as the Saeima will only see amendments to the Law on Monday, which will determine the addition of administrative territories in the current Varakalans District to Madona municipality, but in municipal elections the previous vote will begin on Monday, so it is important to provide the voters with clarity as to whether the voting in this electoral area will take place and the votes they have passed on will be valid. IN the view of CVK, it is not possible that the voters would be voting and then a decision would be made, which would mean the cancellation of these votes.

Elections in these areas must be cancelled because the Constitutional Court's judgment changes the boundaries of the current electoral area and the electoral body who has the right to elect the relevant municipal council and candidate in the respective electoral area also changes accordingly.

THE CVK has commissioned the election of the municipality of Rēzekne to the Commission and the municipal election of the municipality of Madona to suspend the preparatory work of the municipal council and immediately to place on the polling stations information that the elections of the relevant municipal council were not held on 5 June 2021.

We CAN also submit a draft law of the Saeima “Madona District Council and the electoral law of Rezekne District Council”, as it is also necessary to determine the procedures by which elections of the newly formed Madona municipality and Rezekne District are to be announced and organised. WE CAN encourage local elections in Madona and Rezekne to move to September 11.

In these electoral areas, elections will have to be re-launched, so that the submission of candidates' lists, the change of the electoral area and other electoral processes will be renewed. Consequently, the election signs of 5 June in these constituencies, and also the envelopes of the postal vote received, will have to be discarded by drawing up the act.
