The municipality of Rezekne, in cooperation with the British Council representation in Latvia and the “Providus”, has launched the project “Strengthening the Citizens' Advisory Councils in Rezekne District” to promote the strengthening of local society and local government.

The aim of the project is to promote dialogue and the circulation of information between residents, parish administrations and local government. Involve a wider number of local population in the decision-making process, with particular attention to the involvement of low-income people. Within the framework of the project with the support of the British Council representative in Latvia from October 2022 to March 2023, educational seminars, workshops and experience exchange activities for representatives of local council and local government will be held in Rezekne municipality.

In the opening of the project, which took place AT Maltas secondary school, representatives of the council of the council of the people, the heads of parish administrations, the members of the Rēzekne District Council and representatives of the local government administration, as well as the Ambassador of Great Britain in Latvia Paul Bramel (Paul Brummell).  During the event, the participants met the results of the research carried out by “Providus” and the conclusions of the work of the Consultative Councils in Rezekne District, discussed the potential of the people's advisory councils, as well as learned more about the activities planned under the project.

Vice-Chairman OF the Rēzekne District Council Ērika Teirumnieka in his speech emphasized the importance of the advisory councils in the decision-making process of the local government. “Citizen is our value.” The main task of the local government is to maintain the war in a particular area so that the people who live in a safe place feel confident and feel belonging to their place. Of course, the best thing to do is know the people who live in their place and, in my opinion, it is the best proof of the importance of the advisory councils of the population, "said Ērika Teirumnieka in his speech.

Mr Zane Matesovičs, head of the British Council in Latvia, explained that it is important for the organisation to support the project, as it is already the Seventh Year Programme in Latvia.People to People“Increase the strengthening of civic active and cohesive society.“ Citizens' Consultative Council ”is an effective tool for the consolidation of society if the councils are composed of representatives of the various Communities and a successful collaboration between all the parties involved – parish residents, representatives of the local government administration and Members – is formed. This is a way, as well as the people who live beyond the centre of the municipality can be heard and influenced by the development of the parish and the municipality by improving the lives of the local population. '

The Consultative Council of the population has been active in most of the municipality of Rezekne since 2011. The Consultative Council of Citizens is a group of socially active people who represent the interests of the parish population and operate on the basis of voluntary principles, as well as form a public opinion parish. It aims at activating the dialogue between citizens and the local government, thereby promoting exchange of views on the issues raised and parish issues.
